The Yardbirds, plus Massive Prog Rock Styley

Posted by: garyi on 21 July 2002

Returned from a booty today, (must say the girlfriend is getting a bit pissed off with them) and picked up the Yardbirds Greatest Hits on 3 LPs. It appears to be a german pressing.

I already have abit of yardbirds knowcking around, but find I also like the earliest stuff, its really good.

However this pressing I have here is utter crap. I swear they have recorded it from another record. The disks are in perfect condition but the crackle louder than the music. doh!

So question one:

What are the official Yardbird Albums?
Assuming I can find them which should I go for first?
I notice Jeff Beck on this record, has he done anything else I should know about bluesy style?

Also on my Car Boot escapade I picked up Genesis A Lamb Lies Down. Actually its not to bad. I have this kind of intense hate of Genesis because of mr Baldy Pates cak voice, however this seems to be someone else, Gabrieal?

Is there any Genesis stuff which isn't a. Crap 80s style b. 'Theme' ambums, like this one?

Should I just not bother with Genesis, I seem to have survived well enough with out them?

One other technical point. I tend to geek to the max and give the records a clean through this thing a ma jig I have here, however one record I bought the other week (Yardbirds Little Games) buckled upon entering the water, it was a 'Fame' cutting which I know to be crap being as it is like a sheet of paper, however I am now warey, anyone know a way to get a buckle out?

Some are crap 70s style theme albums.

Tony.

PS There are two really cool cheesy Moog solos on Lamb lies down that are almost worth owning the album for. One is on the track 'In the cage', I have no idea where the other is, and its probably not worth playing the whole damn thing to find it!

The Lamb should be played at least once a year by everyone to remind them that not all Prog was as overblown as the Pet Shop Boys live sets.

Garyi - try Selling England by The Pound or even Foxtrot, though side B is one long track. But the amazingly emotional singing of mrG more than makes up for that - you will believe it's the second coming. These have mellotrons! Hammonds! 12 string guitars! Bass pedals! What more could one want?

wink

Stephen

PS Tony - it's 'Riding the Scree' and it's NOT a moog. It's an ARP Pro Soloist

No mishtake Moneypenny.

3peice box set, i.e in a nice yellow box with five of them on the front all looking young and spotty.

As I said it seems to be a German one, at least most of the test is german excpet for a translation at the bottom.

Quite nice as it goes, one of them though has a bad kink in it, but the old ittok seems to be tracking it ok.
