Need help : Linn LP12 w Lingo & Akito tonearm

Posted by: silklee on 26 January 2003

There is a deal for the above for slightly more than the equivalent of a thoudsand pounds. Lets assume it is in good condition. I am using a p25 now with the dynavector 10x4. If I should get it, would I be able to fit the 10x4 onto the arm without any hassles. Btw, my phono is the GSP ERA gold.
Please help highlight any ‘problems’, be it a matching problem between cart and arm, armboard and cart or whatever. I am very new to LP12 and turntables in general.
Thanks in advance.

Another thing. I heard that the LP12 might not work on a fully suspended rack. Mine is the particular novus and it is a semi suspended rack. Will there be any problems? A home trial might be out of the question.

You will need to check that the 10x4 is not too light for the Akito. When I got my LP12 (Lingo and Akito) My 10x Gold was too light and we could not get the arm to balance without the weight fouling the bearing. I ended up with a 17D2, nice but not cheap
I'm not sure if the Gold is lighter than the standard 10x4 it would be worth trying to find out.

LP12/Lingo/akito/10x4 for circa 1000 ukp? Sounds roughly right.

I use a 10x4 on an Akito, works fine.

Be careful not to buy a dud, there are plenty about. If in doubt take it to a (Good)dealer to have it checked out and set up.
If you want to look yourself, check arm bearings are not damaged, by moving counter weight back till arm just rises and turn the bias to 0.Now gentaly tap the arm , it should swing gentaly and smoothly across, with no jerking or judders. It it doesn't its nackered and worth nothing. Check the bearing and spindle by lifting off outer platter then the inner the spindle should be free of marks with no dents in the end.(make sure the seller has removed the platters for transportation if not reject the deck as it WILL be damaged) , straight and covered in oil.when you spin the platter you should hear no rumbling or other strange noises.
Check suspention bounces freely and smoothly by tapping tthe centre of the platter gentaly.
Make sure the deck is not third or forth hand etc, as this should lower the selling price and increases problems and for that price it must have a Circus bearing fitted.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

I called the seller. All things considered, i think i will have to give it a miss. Condition does not seems to be tiptop as described by the seller.

I guess I will stick to my P25 for the foreseeable future.
