Neat Ultimatums

Posted by: NB on 10 February 2004

I have read that the Neat ultimatum series are available without crossovers for active purposes.

Has anyone tried a a pair of Ultimatums in active mode?

James,

I just enjoy the sounds they make, I don't understand how they work!

However I will find out from Bob for you,

I believe Bob has sold a pair of active ultimatums to at least one customer who was using Naim amps. They supplied the crossover information to Naim who adapted one of their xovers for use. Bob told me this when I tried Ultimatums which were unfortunately too large for my room.

Thanks Vimal,

Having lived with active Neats do you think its better to go active with a pair of 300's or go for a single 500?

Yes I would love to hear if anyone has considered bi-amping a pair of neats and what the benefits are?

Me too. My understanding is that biamping Ultimatums with 2 x Dynie HX 1.2 is spectacular. I'm running a single 500 into my MF7s, but want to demo the Dynie amps in my system.

On another note I have just seen a new pair of Neat MFS's in the new finish in Cymbiosis and they look absolutely stunning.

Not sure what the finish was but it was reddish and was laquered, as I said stunning.

Hi NB
Depends on whether you like the active sound.

From what I remember, when hooking up to the Nap500,the music just beefed up,3d and more solid.
For me it was like a pair of 135s only more (like a pair of S/caps added ).
Because I like the active sound I preferred the six pack.
I know that Bob thinks Bi-amping and Tri-amping is one of the options which will improve the sound, I have never tried it as I dont think Naim amplification is suitable for this(Also need cables making up)
I would try to get to hear them active before
considering passive 500 or active 300 (you will need three of these) or maybe borrow three new 250s from a dealer and try it.
All the Best

Hi, Vimal/NB,

Or also, even bi-amping the Ultimatums with two 300's , as the crossovers in the Neats seem to be optimised for this.

Hi Rod
The answer to you question is the same as above for NB.
You are right about the crossovers in the Neat, being optimised for Bi-amping.
