Devs System

Posted by: belsizepark on 23 May 2002

Last night I was fortunate to go and listen to Devs system. I knew what it was from the profile.. Linn LP12/Aro/Armageddon, power supplies all over the place, CDSII/XPS, Nat 01, 52/supercap 2x135s SBLs and various other additions. I was therefore quite excited to listen to this.

What I did not plan or expect was that when I walked into Devs listening room, that the hifi itself almost paled into insignificance, besides his vast CD and record collection. Looking through many of the CDS, I must say I hardly recognised any of the performers and many of the record labels. It is certainly an eclectic taste.

However listening to the system had me in awe. I am not sure that I could possibly have a system that sounded that good and have it on as background music. I just had to listen. The clarity of the music was perfectly clear and I would use a term "crisp" not sure how others describe these things..

I will comment however (maybe some people will say that I have poor hearing) that I could not know at any given point if I was listening to a CD or an LP (apart from of course the initial pop when the needle touched the LP)

The music we listened to varied from Indian Classical music through house music. I am not normally a fan of house music but on Devs system I could not help but like what he played. Dev played for me the music of a Spanish Singer called Estrello Morentez and also a Patti Austin CD.. both of which I intend to go out and purchase. The vocals were something else.

Combining the sound of the music with the smell of the incence that was burning and the tolerant nature of Devs wife Tuku made a lovely evening...

I am still trying to work out if the music collection or the hifi is more impressive...

Thanks Dev!

Hi 'Belsize Park' (aka Michael),
It was nice to meet you yesterday - thanks for the write up!. Through this forum I've got to hear other members systems and you get to learn lots about how systems sound in different rooms, and also I've also picked up quite a few music recommendations. I like a whole load of different stuff ranging from Indian Classical, Jazz, Drum & Bass, Arabic, and World Music and it's great to pick up different styles. I could tell you certainly love your music! just like me! On the equipment front, I've recently put back my SBL's after trying out and blowing up my spare pair of Kans (RIP) and I think the system is sounding pretty cool right now.
Come again.

Oh dear. Care to divulge the track that was playing when you killed them? frown

Joking aside, have you really killed those wicked Kans?

Shahreza - since Belsizepark has visited I have moved and have the benefit of a really large room and have installed a mains spur, new stands, Galaxie 17 (i.e all the things that I put off doing smile). I think it sounds great, really lively fast dynamic, big, etc, etc - but I always think Naim systems sound great. What has blown me away and it needs repeating is how good my NAT01 is with a decent aerial (Galaxie 17) it's really amazing. Dev

You're getting evangelical about that NAT!

Glad it's all hanging together - wish I could say the same wink
