Suzanne Vega:Songs in Red and Grey

Posted by: Nuno Baptista on 04 August 2007

What you think about the album Songs in Red and Grey?I´ve got a few albuns from her,for exemple the last album. She´s a great singer, but this particular album is a bit expensive, because has been discontinued from the editor, and there are only a few available for sale.I could manage to get 99.9 for a good price, for example.I´ve heard S in R and Grey and it seems very musical!Do you know any site where I can order it?Besides Amazon

Hi Nuno,

I have just ordered a copy from www.play.com.

Excellent album IMHO, but it does seem to be unavailable new currently. It was available from Amazon(UK) for £3.99 recently but it is now only on pre-order. You can buy it through their marketplace for £4.99 (used). Play.com have it at £4.99 (3 for £10) but it is out of stock as well. I suspect this is probably a Europe (?) wide problem. Her own website is offering it at $14.00.

I am a big fan of SV and saw her recently at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (fab!). I have all her albums and Red and Gray is, IMHO, her worst. Unless you are a mega fan, I would strongly recommend getting any of her other albums before this one. Cheers, Marc

Marc

What would say was Suzanne's best?

Thanks, Rotf

Best album is Solitude Standing IMHO. Very very fine album.

The latest, Beauty and Crime, which i got last week is a bit disappointing TBH.

Disappointing, a bit predictable, and very short. Shame, I was expecting great things from this one. It has 3 or 4 really good tracks, but rather like the last REM album, you feel about 2/3 of the way through that you're wasting your time.

My personal faves are the first one, which has a very distinctive sound even on the early CD issue, and oddly enough 'Days of Open Hand', which has a strain of overcast gloominess which I find oddly appealing sometimes... Smile

ROTF, IMHO 'Nine Objects of Desire' is by far her best album overall. But then I have a weakness for much of the stuff produced by Mitchell Froom (her ex).

For a really far-out combo, try the piece she co-wrote with Philip Glass, 'Lightning', available on a very reasonably priced intro to PG entitled 'The Essential Philip Glass'. The Essential Philip Glass

Marc - thanks I'll give Nine Objects of Desire a go and seek out the PG track.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with that. I must persevere with B&C, but somehow can't summon up the will. Still, it's not as disappointing as the latest Rickie Lee Jones, which redefines disappointing.........

Excellent recommendation - thoroughly enjoyable and different from what I was expecting.

I just got Solitude Standing on CD last week (I have it on vinyl but I have no phono stage and a cheapy Yamaha TT only). I saw her Montreau performance on telly and was taken by how good she sounded live - rekindled my interest for her stuff.

I listened to this again last night and it remains a bit underwhelming.

To be positive; how about suggestions for artists that may enjoyed by Suzanne Vega 'fans'.

I'll kick off with Aimee Mann, Tanya Donnelley and perhaps Laura Veirs too.
