Cyrus, never ever again !!!!!

Hello Naim owners I am a proud converted Naim owner; it all started a year ago with building a Cyrus system consisting of 6 units namely CD8SE, Pre vs2, X power and 3 PSXRs. When I bought the player a year ago, straight out of the box it was full of distortion yes that’s right distortion. My dealer changed it straight away, not a good sign start as you mean …………The replacement was better however it did on occasions skip.
I put up with for 9 months until I could stand it no more and discovered with it being an early player there was a software update for it. I contacted my dealer and it was sent to Cyrus. On return it was just the same, my dealer changed it for a new unit. Guess what this one had very noisy motor, yet another new unit. This one would not play cds constantly coming up with disc error and ejecting it.
Another new unit this was the same even with a brand new cd, my entire disc are handled with care. The final straw came just before Christmas with yet another new unit this being number 5 and still refused to play.
Another thing it did was after reading the TOC the play symbol was on, disc spinning no music.

My dealer offered me my money back on the player and the X Power I bought recently. All the units were put in part exchange for Naim.
What a revelation absolutely superb cannot praise Naim enough. Just waiting for Hi cap and Napsc to finish it off. I wish I had bought Naim at first. I would not recommend Cyrus again. Naim is superior in every way well done happy Hi Fi owner. I understand now what you mean by You're nobody without a Naim

I used to have Cyrus - just a CD6 and 8VS2. Whilst I thought, at the time, that they were good, they were clearly beaten by Naim.
As a member of the Cyrus forum, I am aware that lots of people have difficulties with the SE range of CD spinners. However, when they work, I believe they sound great!
Anyway, welcome aboard!

I never even got to audition the latest Cyrus CD players. The dates just kept going back and back as the software was not ready. After about 6 months I simply gave up and bought some new speakers.
Touch wood - my NAIM equipment has never missed a beat in 10 years service. Much more reliable than its owner that's for sure.

Hi Paul, welcome.
You will find Naim CDP's not immune to problems but Naims customer support is legendary so have no fear.
Congratulations on your new aquisitions.

I remember just seeing how well my Audiolab 8000A competed against a 62/140.
The difference was immense, even my 72 year old mother heard the immediate difference !
The Audiolab is now in it's box, ever to be used again ?
I remember lusting after the 8000A for years, it sounds like crap compared to my budget Naim system !

My s/h Cyrus CD8 did have an intermittent skip problem which eventually got sorted out by Bradley in service. From what I've read, even the lauded 555 have intermittent skip problems that still have not been fully resolved. The Ndac and CD8 produce very good results.

I had an original Cyrus One, plastic case model! Serial number 100356! The phono stage was superb on it! Indeed I only got rid of it after I got a Stageline, the Cyrus One was just as good.

Paul, it seems you are a chosen one ... anonymously by Cyrus for beta-testing of defective SE drives

. Honestly -- I have never heard such a sad story so far!
I tried CD8SE in a showroom -- very regular player, like NAD M5.
I did not find any mechanical problems though.

I also had an Audiolab sooo bad and not musical .... when i ran into Naim it was like a miracle, so much music and clear improvements when upgrading there "before my eyes/ears!
Before i had to read the magazines to "listen" to what i was not listening. After Naim i stopped buying magazines.

What HiFi gives such good comments on Cyrus. How comes?

I too, had an Audiolab (Pre/Power) setup prior to Naim. My SuperNait is a clear improvement but I would not ever charcterise the Audiolab as "sooo bad". It was actually very good.

Why do they give great reviews to Cambridge Audio?

Welcome Paul,
I had a Cyrus One (In The Dark Ages), it was superb for the money.
Now I'm very happy with my Naim-set.

seems alot of faults identified with naim gear on this forum too

I'd rather this thread not turn into a witch hunt or opportunity to grind the axe or fling some "mud".
All manufacturers of CD players face potential issues with respect to mechanisms, and nobody is immune to software issues either. Question is, when issues arise, how you deal with them. However, it does seem that in this case Paul has been really, really unlucky! Good on the OP for persevering and good on the dealer for what appears to be their very supportive attitude.
Paul, I'm pleased to hear you're delighted with your new Naim kit - enjoy, and welcome to the forum!

Hi Patrik maybe it's because the hi fi press do not run them for long periods the faults do not show up. Every new unit I had I run in for a week non stop playing different cds. Unit number 3 stopped playing cds on repeat after a few hours.

It always seemed to me after you burnt the unit in it would start with problems and once it started rejecting cds it would not play the disc it rejected again.

Hi the transport is the same as the CD8SE with an extra power supply but the problems are still there. Don't want to put you off but I was a great Cyrus fan, never again like I said even the 2010 model with the new facia is supposed to help load the cd like mine but it didnt. If you do buy I hope it's ok but be warned........

Perhaps because you can end up with a very listenable CA system for the price of a couple of Naim power cords. CA and Naim are Different companies with different price points and a different market.

MUNCH Who bothers to read that shite? unless you have a hour to kill on a station new stand.
Steady on Munch after all didn't that shite mag make the Naim Uniti one of its products of the year??
“This machine is the most innovative product Naim has ever made, and one of its finest: expect it to be a trendsetter.”
What Hi-Fi, August 2009"
They generally speak highly of Naim gear.

I must say i loved the Mission/ Cyrus products until around 92-93 when the Cyrus 3 came out.
That was such a disapointment compared to the great sounding Cyrus One and Two.
I still use a mint 1991 Cyrus One in my bedroom system and it still works perfect and sounds great.
I guess it all went downhill when Mr. Farad Azima sold the Mission /Cyrus group in the mid 90s. What ever happened to Mission Loudspeakers? They use to be great value in the late 80s until mid 90s. Remember 752 Freedom?

I note Richard Dane's comments earlier, but I must just comment here as I though Cyrus was really good with the Cyrus 1 and 2, I used to sell lots of them.... And then the C3 came along..... more money and not as good IMHO. I voted with my feet after that and have not sold Cyrus since. Your comments are just so similar to my own feelings at that time.
Don't get me wrong, I wish Cyrus no ill - good luck to them, just not for me.
