Cyrus, never ever again !!!!!

Hello Naim owners I am a proud converted Naim owner; it all started a year ago with building a Cyrus system consisting of 6 units namely CD8SE, Pre vs2, X power and 3 PSXRs. When I bought the player a year ago, straight out of the box it was full of distortion yes that’s right distortion. My dealer changed it straight away, not a good sign start as you mean …………The replacement was better however it did on occasions skip.

I put up with for 9 months until I could stand it no more and discovered with it being an early player there was a software update for it. I contacted my dealer and it was sent to Cyrus. On return it was just the same, my dealer changed it for a new unit. Guess what this one had very noisy motor, yet another new unit. This one would not play cds constantly coming up with disc error and ejecting it.
Another new unit this was the same even with a brand new cd, my entire disc are handled with care. The final straw came just before Christmas with yet another new unit this being number 5 and still refused to play. Eek
Another thing it did was after reading the TOC the play symbol was on, disc spinning no music. Frown My dealer offered me my money back on the player and the X Power I bought recently. All the units were put in part exchange for Naim.
What a revelation absolutely superb cannot praise Naim enough. Just waiting for Hi cap and Napsc to finish it off. I wish I had bought Naim at first. I would not recommend Cyrus again. Naim is superior in every way well done happy Hi Fi owner. I understand now what you mean by You're nobody without a Naim Smile

Why do they give great reviews to Cambridge Audio?

And less good reviews to Rega?

Interesting in this context to see that you can get very heavy discounts (aprox. 30%!!)on the CDSE range from Cyrus dealers.

I lost interest in their brand when they first released the "Billy Ray". Things just got worse with the more recent "Miley" model.

Who bothers to read that shite?

The answer to that, Stu, is an awful lot of people. To the average "civilian" the hifi and home cinema worlds are pretty daunting, and they are terrified of spending their hard-earned cash on the wrong stuff. WHF is widely available and its reviews are easy to read, since they don't bother with any technical analysis.

People hate coming into the shop and appearing ignorant, so they try to get some knowledge from a widely available publication - maybe even just by reading at a news stand while waiting for a train! Roll Eyes

I have an older cyrus system (8 boxes, dad3q, pre, 2 x power, 4 x PSX-R, Hark, 753 Freedom) never gave me any trouble in 10 years, although I do admit I love the Naim sound more, the Cyrus upgrade path is great if your a student and cannot afford to splash 2K+ on each component

I was going for a Cyrus Pre/amp combo back in '87, but after listening and buying an LP12 the budget was busted, and so a S/H NAIM 12/160/AR8s were purchased, never regretted either purchase.

I always wonder what I'd be listening to now, if we had bought the Systemdeck(I think it was) and the Cyrus (can't remember the speakers).

Beats me - since Cambridge Audio moved its manufactrure to China its stuff has been dire, but I'm sure What HiFi has it reasons.

Another magazine praises valve amps from China that are beyond horrible .. and the abysmal WAD.

Still even these magazines have to acknowledge then when it comes to music, design, build and service then Naim is up front.

I assumed Cambridge Audio stuff was bought without audition; I didn't believe anybody would listen to it and still buy it Big Grin

I knew somebody who bought a CA set-up just because it got 5 stars in WHF and invited lots of people around to listen - one of the worst experiences ever: how do you tell somebody he has wasted his hard earned cash - he could have bought a TEAC mini system for a quarter of the price which would have left it for dead.

i gotta start using these things Confused

i had infinity rs monsters in 1982 with a bryston 1b and 4b that put out about 1hp. Eek my friend had a 42/110 that i loved but could not imagine could compete with the bryston. Frown i took a chance and i still remember the first track i heard and how these small shoe boxes absolutely kicked the bryston in the jarbles. Big Grin the bryston was not musical at all by comparison. i wondered why i ever bought it in the first place. Red Face my friend warned me though that naim was like a cult. 25 years later i am surrounded by naim, talking about naim, thinking about going home to my naim after work and conspiring to get more naim... Cool

Cyrus seem to take a thumping (sometimes) in serious hi-fi circles. I test drove the then CD8/Pre Power and Monos several years ago when I ended up with my CDX2/202/200 - soundwise it was nowhere near what the Naim stuff delivered in fact I doubt it would have competed with a CD5i/Nait 5i - but lets be honest it's built to a completely different design spec and at least part of it's attraction is its small dimensions. Different solutions for different people.

Lindsay
