UK Tax question - someone who knows (not guesses, please)
Posted by: JWM on 06 January 2008
I'm on self-assessment. I normally get my (paper) return back in time for HM to do the calculation. But missed the 30.09.2007 deadline because of lack of time.
Will the online method by 31.01.2008 still do all the calclulation for me, or (having missed the earlier deadline) do I have to get an accountant in to do the maths for me and work out the actual tax?
I am on self-assessment not because of huge income (wouldn't be on s/h olive if it was!), but type of employment. I'd rather not have to pay an accountant if possible.

Talk to the tax people. I've done that and they were really helpful.

If your figures are not too complex ie lots of unearned income and capital gains - give it a go and see what happens - by the time you call the tax office you could have it done unless you have to get a password etc etc
I was surprised how quick it was until I needed to declare foreign income.

James, if you only have to record UK earned income and interest/divis etc., as long as you've got all your paperwork/statements etc to hand, it's really not that hard. The paper form they include to help you work it out means you can just lift figures to the equivalent box on the paper return itself. I can usually get mine done in under an hour (+ the 3 hours to find all the sh*t I knew I should have put in my 'Tax Return' boxfile a year ago...)

This is not guesswork, but I do have a bad memory.
You will need to apply for a Government Gateway PIN number. For security reasons, yes security, they post it to you.
I can’t remember how long it takes to arrive. Have a look on the Inland Revenue website.

I did my return online last year after the sept deadline. When I submitted it the system instantly told me what I owed for the end of Jan payment. I am assuming it will be the same this year.

Hey, hey ... just checked, I've found my user id and even remembered the right password. Tax Returns are GO! (Well, when I've waded through the mountain of supporting paperwork...)
Thanks again,
James

Don;t get excited about online rebate - I didn't get one either last year or the year before. Must get round to doing my return soon...
