Headline

Due to my habit of late night sessions with load music and wine, my wife has decided she can stand it no longer, so options are.
1. Get divorced (expensive solution)
2. Turn the music down (Cheap solution)
3. Get headphones (Ideal solution)
I have never owned a set so my questions are ..
1. Do I need a Headline ? What is a good S/H price ?
2. Is there a difference (apart from price) between the new and old headline ?
3. How do I connect it to my 82 ?
4. Do I need a seperate PSU , if so whats best ?
5. Advice on headphones.
Budget for all of this .. no more than £500

1.Yes. There aren't any (see 2).
2.Yes. The new one's miles better.
3.Into the aux socket via the supplied lead. Mute the pre line of green buttons and press aux on the record line of red buttons.
4.You can run it off the 'digital 52' socket on a Supercap, but it's not so good and you probably haven't got one, so yes. The Flatcap 2 is miles better than the NAPSC2. The Hicap 2 is spectacularly good.
5. Sennheiser HD650s at £240 online, or be a cheapskate and get HD600s for about £130.
Alternatively, depending on your marital situation, it may be better to get divorced.

Alex,
All the usual benefits - more spaciousness, more detail, better bass. The NAPSC2 sounds wonderfully in control of the HL2 but quite constrained in comparison to the FC2, which sounds very authoritative and wide-ranging but is in turn blown away by the HC2, which sounds creamy, fat, fab and constantly surprising.
I'm still using the NAPSC1 though!

I use a headline/hi-cap and HD-600's and am more than pleased with the result. Granted the hi-cap is a bit pricey as a p/s to the headline but I had one spare!
Beware HD-600's as they are not particularly quiet, being an open design. Last week I woke my wife up listening through them (I was downstairs)!!!

Forgive the question but would the headline be a big improvement with Sennheiser 650s over me currently plugging them into my tape deck?

OK, so given a 102/180 situation and someone with a pair of HD600s, what are the connection options?
Is there anything other than a Headline + NAPSC cofiguration which will work? Maybe something a little cheaper.
On another related subject, has anyone done a direct comparison between an Olive and a Black Headline?

• Gilmore V2
At around 400$US, Gilmore V2 is also an excellent headamp.
Gilmore vs. Headline 2
I found both Gilmore and Headline significatly better than Creek or Rega EAR at least with Grado RS1.

This thread is interesting because I don't get to listen too much when the family is in (most of the time), since they live here too!
I've been considering headphones and have come up with the following options:
(i) My "automatic" choice would appear to be HL/NAPSC/HD600s. Probably about £400 s/h. Also very small so could sit somewhere out of sight.
(ii) As an option, I've toyed with the idea of converting my spare 62 to a headphone amp (as described elsewhere). This could be a bit of fun, but I'd need another Hi-Cap and another shelf on my rack so it would work out expensive.
(iii) I've realised that I've had part of an answer sitting in front of me all the time: I've got a cassette deck (Yamaha KX-580) which has a phones socket. Thus I may just pick up some HD600s. This is the cheapest option, but may not give the best results. In the true Naim tradition, it also gives me an upgrade path (ie. buy a HL/NAPSC at a later date). In fact I'm going to try it with some Walkman headphones asap.
I noted the comment about HD600s being open backed though. is this true of the HD650s as well?

wonder why the SLIC isn't supplied (and priced alongwith) with the headline2 if required to power it ?
if one opts to parasitically power it from a powered NAC input, much against naim's recommendation (for short/compromised headphone sessions) one still needs a SLIC (from 2pin on headline2 to powered input 270degree DIN on 52/252), correct ?
the headline2 captive lead ends in a 180degree DIN which must be connected to a tape out input, so cannot be connected to the powered input on the pre.
is the captive lead connected to the power rails within the headline2 as well ?
if so, then getting signal and power from 52/252 to headline would require it's non cative end to be rewired with a 270degree DIN plug and no SLIC.
either way, since the headline2 takes 2pins (+ve, 0/-ve), one +ve pin from the powered input
remains unused, correct ?
any thoughts...
thanks, rohit

The SLIC isn't supplied as the NAPSC has a captive lead designed for the HL or the 82 power. Better p/supplies require the SLIC.
Someone asked about cheap HD 650s. There's a site called Pro Audio systems or somesuch. However, as I'm just about to take possession of a new XPS2, those nice people at Audio T are about to provide me with a free one (from their sale)!
