Mozart and Ode to Joy

Posted by: StephenK on 31 October 2007

Dear forum members!

I hope to find an expert of Mozart on this forum who can answer a question to which google gave no proper response.

Background: a few months ago I heard a radio interview where a Mozart (as I remember a cantata, KV 2xx) was played. One of the melodies in this cantata was the theme of the Ode to Joy.

Since then I want to find this cantata, and I would be very happy if someone here on the forum knows.

Regards,

Stephen

p.s.
Actually what is also interesting to me is that the ode to joy is so connected with Beethoven. I want to listen to the original Mozart melody, and then raise some philosophical questions about the intention of creating a melody, the political use of a melody, what this say about Mozart an Beethoven and so on.

K 47e & K 53... ?

1767 / Olmeretz / Song for Soprano & Piano "An die Freude, Konigin der Weisen"

http://www.classical.net/music/composer/works/mozart/index.html

'An die Freude' translates into 'Ode for Joy'... (in a funny sort of way)

Wolfi would have been very young when he wrote this, bless him : )

Sorry can't be more helpfull Stephen, I'm sure one of these experts will come along and tell us what it is exactly...
Perhaps you can phone up the radio station and ask... or look up their web site and play-list for when you heard it?

Kind Regards ~

"Lieder" ?
Found this on amazon, the first track is...

"An die Freude".

Unfortunately no sample play list.
I think the translation maybe a bit
dodgy and this could be wrong but
you never know your luck : )

Just one customer review, and he's
not impressed! : (
