Pink Floyd. What gives?

Posted by: jcs_smith on 17 August 2006

What is it about Pink Floyd that inspires such loyalty and passion? I’m sorry but I just don’t get it. I was explaining to someone the other day that whenever I see the initials DSOTM I immediately think of the Dark Side of the Moog series by Pete Namlook and Klaus Schulze and not Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. He said it was sacrilegious and I thought for a moment he was going to get violent. I just don’t understand it. Whenever I hear Pink Floyd I just can’t help thinking Hmm, is that it? OK I don’t like it, but I can’t understand why it generates so much passion. I can understand it when you talk about other music I don’t like such as classical, bebop or classic Soul. But Pink Floyd? Why are they better than Styx or Kansas? They all seem equally tedious to me.
I’m not having a pop here. I have to say that because I know this stuff gets people excited. I’m just totally mystified. The same goes for ELP, Genesis and all that other prog stuff. And what is this about Syd Barrett? I’m totally mystified about the appeal there. Maybe it’s a generational thing. I listened to my dad’s blues collection before punk and once punk came along I never listened, through choice to prog. It just seemed old-fashioned and pretentious and I’ve never been able to shake that negative feeling.

As Frank Black would put it "lately I've been drinking in the new house of the pope" which is dangerous when one comes to posting but what I would like to know from Frederik is

What are the non classical albums you own?

Also may I suggest to ROTF the above mentioned album(s) Dave Godins Deep Soul Treasures - Tracks from the vaults (on the ace label - Kent)
All 4 volumes excellent, start with vol 1. This is the album that got me into soul music.

I'm listening to Jazz on 3 at the moment, which sounds very good if you are near a wireless.

Hi SJB

There will always be exceptions to music that I claim not to like (or do I mean not understand). Soul music I've heard and liked is Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and things like Papa Was a Rolling Stone and I liked some Sly Stone. I'm not really keen on Stylistics, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Gladys Night and the Philadelphia and Tamala Motown sound - I did hear lots of this when I was at school and it just didn't stack up for me against Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Alice Cooper. In fact the only Creedence track I really don't like on Cosmo's Factory is I Heard It Through The Grapevine (though I admidt there are probably much better versions of that song). I guess music is a case of you get or you don't.

I'll try to give: Dave Godins Deep Soul Treasures a listen. Thanks, as always, for the recommendation. The albums you recommended when I asked about Irish Trad. Folk were terrific and much appreciated.

All the best, Rotf

I'm still curious why Fredrik doesn't like Mahler - BTW.
