Rega P3 Cartridges revisited

Posted by: garth on 10 April 2002

Hi All,

I am looking for an economical cartridge to replace my, rather long in the tooth, K9 in my Planar 3. After hearing Rob Holt extolling the virtues of the Denon DL110 MC, I asked my dealer if they could order it. They couldn't find it in their catalogue so I wonder if it is not available in Canada, or has been discontinued. They recommended a bias (sp.?), super bias, or an audionote cartridge - I don't remember the model but it is about a $100CDN or so more than the super bias.

I am looking for something with good flat earth properties but also more richness, warmth, and better bottom end definition than the K9. Many of my records are used and not the greatest pressings so I don't want something that is going to accentuate surface noise or imperfections. The Denon sounded like it would be perfect given Rob's description, so hopefully it is still available. And, for a soon to be father of twins the price is certainly right.

Cheers,
Garth

Try Mantra Audio UK for the DL 110 via their on-line order page for £79 (less VAT on non-UK orders).

Add £10 for shipping and Rob's your uncle (not to mention your guarantee of satisfaction).

Not sure about the cartridge height vs. VTA/SRA with the Rega though. You may need one of Rega's stainless arm spacers or a suitably thick bicycle headset washer to raise/level the arm tube.

Thanks for the input guys. I will be incommunicado for a few days to a week or so but if there are any more suggestions out there please send them along.

Many Thanks,
Garth›
