A Question for iPod experts
Posted by: Richard Dane on 15 April 2010
I have an 80GB iPod Video and it's served me well for the last few years, being a much appreciated companion on my travels and neat little music jukebox for the car.
However, one of the frustrations I have with it is that when your itunes library exceeds the capacity limit of the iPod, you are restricted in what music you can fill the iPod. The only options seem to be by Playlist, Artist or genre. This means that a lot of compilation albums cannot be selected - frustrating!
My questions: Is this a limitation of itunes (running latest update) or of my iPod?
How can I select specific albums I want on the iPod?
It may be that it's time to upgrade to a 160GB Classic but I fear even that isn't big enough to take everything without me having to drop down from my preferred Apple lossless codec.
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

PS - little 9 yr old Lontano Jr knows how to work it all, it is that simple.
But large 63 yr old Howard is a bit of a thickie with technology.

Thanks for the offer Adrian, Sally seems to go quiet when I talk of getting one though. I'll work on her.

What's the difference between 3G and 3GS?

Video, more memory, faster, better battery life, more camera resolution - but I just upgraded and the experience is pretty much the same in practice

As Nero said, plus you get a compass for when you are lost! Rumours are that a new model will get announced mid year but who really knows. I have the 3G and would appreciate the extra processing power of the 3GS but I am holding on for the next model when released.

and 3GS will be able to use all the improvements when OS4 is out in the summer (better multi-tasking for example)

I assume there is an "iPhones for dummies" book?
My Nokia is driving me nuts and I thought that may be I would pay out for an iPhones, but not so sure now.
Get a Palm Pre, I've had mine since it first came out and its an absolute joy to use. I dislike the sterile nature of the iPhone UI, there is no real interaction. The 'cards' of the pre and the gestures used to operate it are intuitive and simple. Its a fun phone.

Ahem? 'Better' multi-tasking? Its the first the iPhone has even seen a sniff of 'multi-tasking' and its not even full multi-tasking. It allows some parts of apps to continue to run, but does not allow full app-to-app multitasking in the true sense.
The implementation is also poor, that sliding dock looks so cramped.

According to iPod experts on another forum a frequent the video iPod is supposedly the best sounding one. Apparently the changed some of the internals from the Classic onwards.
Getting back to the 'manually manage' option, i'm sure you'll find that Dave and my suggestion will turn out to be the logical solution and should not require playlists. I set this up for my partners nano and it works fine.

I wouldn't touch palm with a barge pole at the moment.
And yes King Sizes method would appear t be an answer as well, I have not owned an ipod for quite a while so the software has changed.

I heard this too. It's best to use a dock connector that takes a line out signal to attach it to your car stereo, but obviously that still uses the dac which was one of the bits that was supposed to be better in the Video. Alpine make some head units that take a digital feed from the ipod and use their own dac. The IDA x305 is one of them, but I think there are others. They're pretty cheap by this forum's standards and if you only use your iPod and the radio, they sound like a good idea. They don't play CDs.

The manualy manage option just presents you with your playlists for syncing, i.e. you need the playlist in the first place, with Richard has now discovered.
Nobody has told my iPod this then - as I simply drag and drop the albums I want onto the iPod. I have never created a playlist in my life.
Cheers
