Farewell 'Basically Sound'

Posted by: J.N. on 25 May 2006

A sad day yesterday - the last visit to my local Naim dealership, which is closing.

That's (left to right) Martin Payne, Graham (who ran BS) and me, having just returned from 'The Last Supper' at the local hostelry.

We remain hopeful that another local dealership will replace BS, as us Naim nutters in this area need it!

So thanks to Graham, and previous incumbents for many a happy visit, sensible advice, and good demonstrations down the years.

Since 1982 I have made many good friends through Naim ownership and Basically Sound, in this country and Europe too.

Farewell old friend.

John.

It is sad to see the closing of a good store. In this country we now see many good places having to become home theater emporiums, multiroom installation maestros, or close shop. Hopefully Basically Sound closed under happier circumstances.

Yep.

A place like David and Alma is extremely rare.

Count your blessings, Matt.

Kuma,

How about posting a picture of the place with David & Alma! That would be great Smile

My supercap will arrive tomorrow. I still haven't scheduled installation but I'll go to David and Alma and get it myself if I have to.

bbb111, take a picture of the place with David & Alma when you go Smile

Thanks for excellent photo, as a fellow BS customer myself, it will be good to keep as a reminder of many happy visits.

Great picture John!

We'll miss Graham and the old Victorian school!
What an awesome place it was for a Naim dealer and his customers Smile

I should perhaps make it clear that 'BS' has closed due to personal reasons of the owners. It continued to be a thriving dealership of Naim and other good quality marques, right up to its closure.

It must leave a big hole in Naim's local market, and we are hopeful that a new Naim dealership will replace it soon.

That's too bad. It looks like an interesting place to go to. Good luck on getting a replacement Naim dealer in your area.

We would like to add our thanks to Graham and Basically Sound for all your help and advice in the past. Like John, we have got to know Graham more as a friend than just a dealer and trips to Bracon Ash will be missed.

We look forward soon to a new Naim dealership in this area... so we can start to get those orders in once again!

Its a great photo John, thanks for posting it.

Many moons ago BS got me started with a 42/110 between my LP12 & Kans.

Best wishes to all. Hope a new dealer grabs the opportunity soon.

Regards,

Steve.

John

Wholeheartedly echo all that has been said about BS, Graham and predecessors (the late Julian in particular)and friends made; you, Graham and Martin amongst them! I wish I could have been there for the 'last supper' (I assume it was in the Bird in Hand?).

I miss Saturday afternoons drinking tea, listening to music and putting the world to rights in the lovely Norfolk countryside. I don't think there will ever be anywhere else like it. Though certainly the end of an era, I'm sure that we will all retain many happy memories of the place, and the people, for many more years.

I wish Graham well for the future and hope Norfolk gets it's new dealership soon.

Keep groovin'

I only visited Basically Sound once - brilliant location set in beautiful Norfolk countryside - not so long ago and my memory for names is letting me down however I think it was Graham whom I met there. At the time while we were chatting I picked up a thread that, with a bit more research and confidence he may consider setting up a new store given the great customer base already established. I don't suppose there was any reference made to this idea during your recent meeting? It would seem such a logical step to take.

Hi Dave;

We have 'Signals' just south of Ipswich.

We are also hopeful that there will be a replacement Naim dealership established, closer to Norwich.

I too started my Naim journey with Graham, a little Nait 3 some 10 years ago.
It was so nice having a local dealer. I could pop in, have a listen and he was only to pleased to lend stuff out. Looking back I guess I took this service for granted.

I have had some great service / advice from some if the on-line dealers but there is no substitute for face to face service.

Good luck to Graham and co and hopefully someone else will start up something in Norfolk, I believe there is a strong enough market for someone to give it a go although beating that location will be one heck of a challenge.

Thanks for the link J.N.

I went there recently - lovely chap who runs it - and it's his house basically, which seems to be the trend these days...

A real shame-I think I bought my first Kuzma Stabi t/t there in the early 90's?

I say 'I think' because I cannot remember...too many small vowels in my clubbing days Eek

Know I should have come back to Bracon Ash after the "Last Supper" to join in the photo shoot!! Maybe another time, if you get my train of thought.
