CDx v CDx2 v?

Posted by: Bruckner on 05 February 2004

Hi, apologies if it's been done to death before. I'm loooking for a new CD player to go with my 72/Hi/180/Harbeth C7's. As I'm delighted with my Naim amps I reckon a Naim CD player may be a wise move. I reckon a CDX looks a bargain compared to the CDX2. Is the CDX 2 significantly better than CDX which go for around £1200.

Thanks

Well, I don't totally agree with Ross here. I have heard a CD2 and a CDX2 side by side (both on Fraim in the same system) and although the CDX2 is better, to me the difference isn't significant enough to part from my trusty CD2. So, I guess a CDX should be a serious challenger...

Yes, it is. I have just spent a week with a CDX2 - even a bare CDX2 (no XPS) gave my CDS2 a run for its money and was better in many respects. It is certainly better than the previous CDX.

Better? or Different? Confused

Concidering that the 390s is close on £6K I would expect it to be a little better than the CDX2/XPS. A friend of mine has one (a 390s) in a ML/B&W system and thinks that my CDS3 is a whole lot better. While that adds nothing to the discussion, as the CDx2 is what were interested in, it may give some indication if future upgrades are forseen.

PR, I said the CDX2 was better than the CDX, not the CDS2/XPS (although in some - not all - respects it is a little better). In my view, the CDX2 is clearly better than the CDX. However, I have no problem if you have a different view.

Dunno Ross. Better in what way?
I prefer the voicing of newer Naim than older one. But, I'm sure few would disagree as you've got few replies here...

Howdy Bruckner.
A cdx2 is significantly better than a CDX.I reckon a 10 % improvement most aspects. ( that figure is right of top of my head - a guestimate for sure ). But , is that improvement worth some £1400.Thats up to you.I think , for your system , a cdx would be anexcellent move .Leaves you a great upgrade path aswell. There will always be xps supplys as a next move.
In time to come you can end up with a cds2/xps. IMHO this player is very special.A huge step up from a cdx2 and , must be, (for my tastes anyway ),one of the best players on the planet right now.
( not heard a cds3 yet , or a cdx2/xps2 )
Regards , Mark.

Another vote for the CDX Bruckner.

They are very good value at the moment and it'll balance your system very well. As Mark says there's an upgrade path just a ready and waiting Big Grin

Ross. I certainly don't disagree with your ears (how the hell could anyone Wink) but I have to vote the CDX2 as a little below the CDX/XPS on my casual listening. Definitely a step up from the CDX. But close to the CDS2/XPS? I don't think so.

Like the CDX was a huge step up from a CD3.5, the CDS2/XPS is quite a different beast over the CDX/XPS, CDX2/XPS2 league of "upgradeable" players. If you think the CDX2 betters the CDS2/XPS in any way I have to question whether you've really "heard" the CDS2/XPS? That's not meant as a criticism of your good self or your listening abilities. Just a possible question posed (apologies if that comes across as too pompous!).

Try to hear a CDX2 as well. You seem quite open minded at this point... as opposed to many of the olive brigade on this forum.

Get real the new kit is miles ahead . Accept it and start saving up for it.CDi, CD2 CDX were no great improvements...CDX2 different ball game.
