NEW Antonio Forcione and Charlie Haden CD

Posted by: Anna Tooth on 12 October 2006

Hi

We have a fabulous new addition to the catalogue. Heartplay, a new True Stereo recording by Antonio Forcione and Charlie Haden.

We are so pleased to have had the opportunity once again to work with the legendary bass player Charlie Haden. Famed for his ground breaking work with Ornette Coleman in the 60s, Charlie has played and recorded with nearly every musical luminary you can think of.

It’s no less of a pleasure to have recorded the outstanding guitarist Antonio Forcione, also no stranger to The Naim Label. Antonio brings his immense talent to the recording, contributing a thrilling performance.

Heartplay is a subtle and sublime collaboration. Charlie and Antonio play a combination of compositions by each other, and a beautifully sparkling track called Child’s Play by Fred Hersch.

Charlie’s bass sounds beautifully deep and rounded, an incredibly satisfying and symbiotic partner with Antonio’s guitar. These elegant and eloquent duets are totally atmospheric and an absolute joy to listen to.

The album was recorded by Ken Christianson in Naim’s very own tried, tested and spectacularly proved “True Stereo” method, where the musicians play live and are recorded direct to a two track reel to reel tape recorder. The result is a unprocessed analogue recording, in which the sound of the instruments is allowed to shine without any hindrance from the procedure.

There's a trcak to listen to here:

Have managed to get my hands on a copy of 'Tony & Charlie's' Heartplay album. Really all I can say is that it is absolutely beautiful. Their playing is getting into the realm of without peer in their regard of subtlety and delicacy and neither have succumed to the need to throw in notes just in order to exert their (ageing?) guitar/bass muscles. Must be the growing old process. They are almost without peer in expressing an inner beauty that is not easily put into words. Straight from the first track titled 'Anna' (for our own fair Miss Tooth?) you will find yourself unable to take your ears away.

The recording is one of the best I have in my collection as well, so a big hats off to Ken C. who has undoubtedly played a big part in allowing the duo to communicate so well to the listener.

The playing contained within the disc can only be described in one way which, could have lent itself to an alternate title, and that is 'heartfelt'. It really is that good.

Enjoy.

Sean.

Just picked up the new one on the website, as well as the new Allegri sampler. Why does it cost less to ship from the UK to NY than it does from Chicago to NY? Always a pleasure.

Where in Chicago? Were you ordering from Music Direct?

I just used Chicago as an example. I buy from MD, Elusive Disc, Acoustic Sounds. Sometimes they don't have the newest stuff that Naim has in England and shipping seems to cost a bit less from England to NY than from Kansas to NY. Just thought it odd.

I got my copy today. It sounds rather like new age noodling, but without any decent tunes, to me.

Very disappointing.

You'll have to excuse Mr Halibut, Anna - he was expecting an album full of Jah Wobble covers Razz

I have nearly all of Antonio's albums, all of which I really like, and I have seen him live too. I also have loads of Charlie Haden stuff. The other CD I bought yesterday as the new Tomasz Stanko set 'Lontano', which is brilliant. I don't just ilke Jah Wobble after all!!

Heartplay certainly has two great artists, is beautifully recorded, and beautifully played. But that does not necessarily make it a good album. To coin a rather passe phrase - it lacks spunk!!!

Good morning, or rather, Hello!
May I intrude myself into such a high ensemble of old members of this forum? I seem to be the newest . . although new does not necessarily stand for young . . .
Nigel, I never had any of those Forcione's records, I've always suspected that beautiful play and perfect recording does not necessarily makes a good album . . . to use your words. May be you're the right person, if you whish, to suggest me a Forcione's recording, that has got that "soul" you're referring to with a rather more colourfull term. (I do not espect it to sound as Janis Joplin, but not even like new age).
I'd be gratefull if you would.
Thank you, and so long to everybody.
Here in Rome finally it is raining consistently, so it is a good friday afternoon, maybe a we, to spend with family and music.
Ciao

My favourites are 'Touch Wood', which has a great band including cello, and 'Meet me in London' with Sabina Sciubba. Both are brilliantly played, and do not lack passion. Antonio's 'Live' album is also extremely good.

Thank you, I'll take note of it.

I have 'Tears of Joy' permanently on the turntable at the moment and this is also beautifully recorded with some exquisite playing and a very bluesy feel on a few of the tracks.

Wonderful.

I look forward to hearing the others.
