The Convincer

Bought the 'new' Nick Lowe album last week, wow! I honestly cannot recall the last time I was so impressed by an album! Excellent lyrics, good tunes, you know how songs used to be.

While I quite liked The convincer, I didn't think it was a patch on the previous 2.
So if you like this one and don't have 'Dig My Mood' or 'The Impossible Bird', I'd certianly recommend that you check them out
Recently got a Remastered 'Jesus Of Cool' - now it don't get better than that

I will definately buy these. If they are better than convincer well.... I think it's the quality of the lyrics and the simple arrangments that do it for me.

Bought 'dig my mood' and I am quite impressed but doesn't seem quite as strong lyrically. This could be due to the production giving his voice slightly less prominence thus the lyrics don't seem as obvious.

I have now bought Impossible Bird and I think it is the best album out of the three. I think 'Wither on a Vine' is one of the best songs ever written!

must admit that's my favourite too. I'm not quite such a lyrics guy as you and probably put more emphasis on the tune, so maybe that's why I rate Dig Your Mood over convincer.
I also like 'Party of One' a lot, although this doesn't tend to get as much praise as the later albums. Its one of my wife's favourites (who's very much a lyrics person) - particularly the song 'All men are liars'

I suppose I do like a good lyric but not at the expense of everything else! I think Nick Lowe is a really good singer and his voice is better suited to simple uncrowded production which also puts his song writing in stark relief. His style of writing also appeals as it is very pithy and economical, an example would be 'smoking I once quit/now I got one lit/I just fell back into it.' from 'I guess I've let things slide'. Other writers such as Dylan are the antithesis of this approach and so generally I steer a wide berth around them!

I heard "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road" on local radio when that album came out and I had to pick it up; I'm glad that I did. It's still the standout song.
Nick deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.
Cheers
Keith.

I've wanted to buy this just for the smarmy cover.
What kind of music is this? I've no idea what to expect. From the cover he seems like a supercool ex-Rat Pack type; the smarmiest of the bunch.
P.S. Just had a listen to the clips @ CDNow. From the cover, I thought he was a sly urban Brit, and from the AMG entry, an aging punk rocker. Imagine my surprise to hear some downtempo American country.
Not currently feeling suicidal melancholia, but I'd better get this just in case. And while it's a cheap new release.
