A little bit of trivia

I thought to myself last night "when was the last time the (UK) General Election was held in a World Cup year" ?
I eventually worked it out but who else knows ?

I'm guessing it'll be 1966, or you'd not have mentioned it.

1970 the same year my twin sons were born
The day (night) of the final I was watching with friends & helping feed the twins.
The day of the election I had an accident leaving work late evening in time to get to the polling station, didn't make it.

That year and the following years were tough
Mortgages impossible to get & rates changing every month, but nothing like it would be by 1979
Gazumping first started
Inflation running away & if I remember it was around 12% or 13%, it went to more than 20% by 1975'ish
Labour capitulating to union pressure, double digit pay rises, Mad Max, gloom & pessimism, got second job to continue the studies, looked at Oz & SA as possible alternatives
I was elated when Heath beat Wilson; but if only I knew what that would do, it got worse & the ever worsening 1970's winters of discontent just around the corner.

Apollo 13 (pub quizz stuff)
Jimi Hendrix died (personal hero - period of mourning ensued)
As did Janis Joplin (didn't like her much)
Beatles split (more grief)

Wilson won both. 1st one was a hung parliament, 2nd gave him a small majority.
Then it just got worse
Then we had the rise of the grocers daughter
