A trick I heard on a motoring show ages ago.
When someone overtakes you on a busy A road (not dual carriageway), leave it a couple of minutes, then count the seconds from when they pass a lamp post, gate, mark of some sort, ahead of you until you pass the same object.
Passing three cars on say the A1 around Berwick, and with the dangers that usually includes, will probably gain you 30 seconds over a five to ten mile journey, or until you hit the next bit of dual carriageway. Not worth the risk really.
Stuck behind a tractor is a different thing, but generally unless it is very clear, it just is not worth overtaking.
The same goes for swapping lanes a lot in a traffic jam on a motorway.
Both of the above do let you spot who are the a**holes who are on the road though.

Good grief, some pretty good driving by everyone involved in fact.
Typical Lotus owners of course

Same goes for speeding ... here in Canada a lot of people like to drive on the highway at 120 to 130 kph. The limit is 100 kph.
The difference in time over a given journey can be measured in minutes, whereas risk is probably doubled and fuel consumption up by 15%.

In traffic queues it does make you feel better if you can get in the queue that's moving though!!

Well done, I face the same struggle every morning on the M23.

It's a road that runs south from the M25, past Gatwick and Crawley towards Brighton.

M25 is boring, the M23 has curves and hills ... Much more fun.

It's a road that runs from just north of the M25, past [and to] Gatwick [via a small spur] to Pease Pottage, just south of Crawley.

M25 has curves and hills. You just need to drive faster to experience the G in the curves [at 2am in the morning]

I include the A23 into the parcourse, you can't really simulate that on the M25.

For full effect on the M25, you'll need a Veyron A23 Handcross and south is fun for a bit though!

OK I forgot Miles is going to Brighton, and not my original mis-assumption of London.
PS I'm fully aware of where the M23 is, the last couple of miles North from the M25 junction to Hooley is fantastic test track (apparently)!
