Just received some MacBooks to set-up for colleagues at work - very positive so far. It can boot into Windoze too, but I've not tried that as we need it for OS X.

Did the ThinkPad die or does your son need more functions than his old kit can offer? I ask because from all I have read ThinkPads are built like tanks an go on and on and on for ever.

A load of Machines , I'm sure one will meet all of your son's requirments.

No I believe it's is still going strong. He wants something a bit more up todate I think DVDR, wireless , XP, USB ports and such like. His old Thinkpad is still running W98 I think.I am not sure how much it can upgraded ,if at all.
I'll get him to check your link.
Thanks.

Not on a Sony. It would seem not a single Vaio was affected see here!!. Good news as I have a Vaio perched on my lap most of the time these days!

One of my friends has just bought a Sony Vaio (sorry forgot the number) and is really pleased with it - it also looks "cool" in all white. Only other thing I would say with the Viao's is that they really shine with X-black displays. I use one on a daily basis and apart from needing Joe90 reading glasses I get on fine with it. Also plays DVD's well if you get a widescreen.

If he wants XP he could get either the Apple Mac Book, or the Sony Mac Book.

Its a shame Sony couldn't try harder.

Just checked with my friend - it was VGNFJ3M/W. Excellent machine, used everyday with no problems. My TX series is the same - as I said above Sony seem to have sent the bad batteries elsewhere!

I love my new little Viao, but I'm afraid it cost a lot more than 700 quid.

So do I - it is probably the best laptop I've owned (I've had HP, Toshiba etc.). Mine was a bargain - but still a little more than £700.00!

I don't know if it helps but I have used a number of laptops over the years from IBM, Dell, SOny Vaio and now Rock. Without a doubt the finest laptop I have used is the Rock. They're a Naim-sized company with a very active forum where the MD posts replies to users - in fact they remind me a heck of a lot of Naim in terms of being British, outperforming most other makes for the money and offering the best end user support in the business.

I ordered a monster machine the XPST2500 which was about £1600 and is a serious rig for gaming, video ripping and flight simulation but they start from £600-£700.

Every Rock laptop has three years warranty as standard, they do X-black type screens as good as Sony and the physical construction makes Sony and Dell look like plasticky rubbish. The back of the screen on my Rock is polished aluminium which is engraved with the Rock logo - discrete but beautiful.

Check out www.rockdirect.com and see what you think (and the cheaper models come in all colours of the rainbow if your SOn wants to be cool!)

Jonathan

Good call Jonathan. They have an excellent reputation with "extreme" gamers. I would guess you are suggesting a Pegasus? 3 year warranty (even return to base) is valuable on notebooks as well.
