Appropriate Ruuber Room Thread!

Dear Friends,

I re-commissioned the Nait 5i and SBls as rear speakers in a 5.1 suround sound system for a house mate of mine today! Trailing some quite respectable Creative Audio fronts and Sub! The result was almost commical! Though the set alone sounds somewhat diminished compared to the old set up, it simply requried that I had to suppress a grin!

Then we watched a film and the result was enjoyable. There is not space for the SBLs in my room, and I was worried that the damp in the place they were stored would spoil them. My friend wanted to borrow the rig, so I did not take much persuading. It was horrendously sharp and tight for the first half an hour! Then it came back! The result was a refusal to believe the Nait was only 50 watts a side, ans the speakers, were twenty one years old! I never saw such an expression on someone watching me put SBLs together! Szymon tried out some bass test recording, and it was apparently the first time he had not heard it bottom out a system! For myself, I have never heard such a clear representation of a bass-line that was so loud: I left the room!!!! [The set up is not entirely optimised, type Smiley].

This must be the first time that SBLs have acted as both rear speakers and de-facto sub in a 5.1 system! Bit like Jackie Du Pre playing at that back of the 'cellos!

Leaving the room isn't a good sign

Dear Steve,

I have an alergic reaction Wasp and Bee stings, but that does not mean there was anything wrong with the poor insects concerned, but my love of weighty bass comes into the same category as my appreciation of insect stings!

Nice to read your words again!

The Volume was set at 11 o'clock, and I suspect that the neogbours would have had something to say had they been about! The source was a PC on full gain on a respectable sound card. Ahhhg! for all that it was not obviously distorting...

Upshot:

My friend has become addicted to the Nait 5i -> SBL combo! He even considered getting these components for his father's home in Poland!

I know at first he thought the whole set lacking in much bass [improved by fitting the bespoke cable made by Chord for me some years ago: mini-ack to DIN], and perhaps a little polite in the top! Haha. Now he reckons that the bass is dynamic, clear, and just as full of music as the rest, and the high lines as clear and natural as you could wish even turned up.

The reaction has been that he has been going through his favourite music wearing a silly grin! In fact his response to NACA 5 as I connected up was that it looked the light cable you see on Merry-go-rounds, and the use of DIN plugs nothing less than old fashioned lunacy. He also found the idea of assembling a two driver speaker from three boxes to be pretty odd!

The important thing is an audition over a few days with SBLs! The Nait 5i is fully their master!

Perhaps this Thread ought to one which migrates to the Hifi corner, Adam?

Anyway, this is how the reputation spreads, and I bet that it will do the export trade no harm in time! Perhaps I should set up shop in Poland selling second hand Naim brought in from the rest of Europe, thus encouraging more new sales in the West...

The trouble will be ever getting the kit back now by the look of it! Him with my Naim pieces, and me with a Sony CD player running Sennheiser 415 headphones. Funny isn't it! When I get the CD5 I will attach it to complete the picture, as it is not much use without the rest [my room is too small for it], and clinch the reputation of Naim once and for all for a Pole! I don't think there is any quantity of Naim Audio equipment in Poland today. Frank F and one other member called Paramedes, both in Warsaw, but none others I know of. The name of Naim is completely unknow to all the Poles I know...
