Wasting time on youtube I came across this video of von Karajan conducting the third and fourth movements of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony:

It's a thrilling performance, and got me thinking again about a work that has been so overexposed that it is easy to forget how great it is.

I'm feeling the need to explore a few different performances of the work. What's your favorite version?

(BTW, I do not own many CD versions, but my favorite so far is Szell and the Vienna Philharmonic live at Salzburg Festival on the Orfeo label.)

And the begining with Otto Klemperer, showing how great music can be revealed in so many different ways ....

Oh, that's easy: Carlos Kleiber conducting the wonderful Vienna Philharmonic, now on DG Originals, coupled with their equally wonderful recording of Beethoven's Seventh. (That Szell taping is pretty special too, with Gilels playing one of the concertos, as I recall.)

Graham,

Your right on Gilels, playing the 3rd Concerto, and there's also the Egmont Overture. I will try the Kleiber!
