Live at the Village Vanguard. Just picked this up and am blown away! Anyone with the slightest interest in piano jazz trio should have a listen. Quite marvellous.Francois Moutin bass, Bill Stewart drums.

Hock, good question but the sound is really very good, exceptional even. My CD3.5 won't play copy protected discs and like you I've been boycotting the European RVGs (very tough as I'll never get to hear Passing Ships or Mother Ship on vinyl) . The US releases aren't protected, so I suspect I've got one of those, or maybe new releases aren't protected. I know I've said this before but you'll love this recordSmile.Very impressed with Bill Stewart. I'm searching the web to see if I can catch the trio live in Paris or somewhere ASAP.

A Basis .. very nice, my only interest in HIFI is a turntable fetish. How's it sound? I'd love to hear one. Best wishes to you and your's.

John

It's just occured to me I've got an atrocious cold so maybe can't hear the skips!

pps It was recorded the week after 9/11 to a small, presumably shocked audience and "the live session was captured on a single stereo mike because a recording truck could not be parked outside on the street at the time (the club is adjacent to a hospital)" That explains the intimate lovely sound I think.

John C, Hock,

I've been appalled at Blue Note europe copy protecting everything. I've got two of the damned things now. Dexter Gordon's 'Our Man in Paris' & another disc by an Italian Saxophoniste who's name escapes me for an instant. I ripped both of these to Wave files and then back to CD, so what's the bloody point ?

I've been tempted by Matial Solal, I'll try to get a US copy.

My copy of this CD is made in the EU and definitely NOT copy protected but I heard from someone who has seen some copy protected versions in Europe. I think the whole thing is scandalous.

The Basis looks awesome Hock. It's the vacuum job, right? I think another poster on this forum has one too.

By way ofa mini jazz thread anyway...

I also bought a nice HighNote of Lucky Thompson with Martial Solal (Lucky in Paris)which I can highly recommend. And as I'm on Lucky Thompson run at the moment, have Milt Jackson's Savoy and Atlantic LPs on regular rotation. I love Lucky Thompson.

Great find 2004!! Tubby Hayes.. Mexican Green (original Fontanas costs a fortune but Mole jazz released this in the early 80s, very nice vinyl copy and tremendous music). I've been searching for 4 years and came close about twice! I'll probably find 5 or 6 now.

I need to get this album. I saw Martial at last years San Francisco Jazz Festival and the show was amazing. By the way, if you are ever interested in visiting San Francisco, you should check out this festival. It occurs twice a year (Spring and Fall) and always has fantastic line-ups.
Here is the upcoming Festival list:
