Length of NACA5 cables for rear speakers
Posted by: Martin C on 25 April 2003
Hi guys,
Just need some advice from you, I want to get the speaker cables for the rear speakers (Intro)
Of course first come to my mind is NACA5 as the main system. But I need 20M each to reach the Intro, as they have to be go around the whole living room (can't hide under the wooden floor).
First of all, if I am talking about 20M each, it's not ideal, but will it suffer in term of the sound quality? Also NACA5 is notoriously stiff for corners!
I also think about the QED silver anniversary as alternative.
Let me know your comments.
cheers
Martin

Martin,
20 metres of NACA5 should be no problem and losses won't be too significant, maybe a slight lowering of treble energy but that's about it - we generally recommend 20-30 metres as a maximum.
If you're having difficulty forming NACA5 around corners, gently soften the cable jacket by using a hairdryer - it works!

Hi Richard,
Don't you think that over a 20 metre run, especially with rear speakers where a lot of the information is ambient you would ideally require a bright sounding cable so that you retain treble energy?

Hi Syd,
Are your suggesting QED silver anniversary, as there is the general comment for it, it sounds slightly on the bright side?
Personally I prefer NACA5 to all with all naim system, well, except the Roksan Caspian AV processor. Just the stiffness of the cable out me off a bit.
cheers

Hi Martin
My preference would be to buy 40 metres of the cheapest cable you can find, ie something from Richer sounds, cheap copper cored cable won't damage Naim amps, and put the money saved from not buying 40mtrs of NACA5 into CDs or DVDs or upgrades in the future.

Do you really need to spend that sort of money for rear speakers in what I assume is a home cinema set-up?

Hi Syd,
That's a good one, it costs £300 for 40M.

If you can afford it and can sort out the routing problem I would go for the NACA5. The latest variant of NACA5 isn't quite so bad as the older stiffer variant was, so you may find it's not as difficult as you've experienced in the past.
I strongly recommend against the use of Silver Anniversary. Although a good cable in its own right, it really will bring a bright character to the sound field. One of the most important things about surround sound is that you want to retain the same characteristics in all parts of the field. If you change to a brighter presentation, there will be a change in character of a sound as it travels from front to back (e.g rockets/bullets/cars/boats/etc).
This kind of change becomes distracting since the artifical nature of the sound field is highlighted by the change in character. It is even better to stick with a lower quality rear solution than to fit a higher quality one with a different presentation.
If you can't route NACA5 appropriately and must choose an alternative cable, the closest other make presentation-wise is Chord Co. It's been suggested to me that in this situation one could use Chord Co. Layline although I don't know this cable myself.
Regards,
Frank.

Forgot to say -
You say you're going for a Trikan. Is there any way you could convince yourself to go the hog and get a Naim Axess? I know it's a lot more money (£1250 against £500-ish), but it's a helluva speaker and maintains that sound field integrity.

Frank.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your advice. I think I will go for NACA5.
For the centre speaker, I was a bit upset actually, haven't checked with Naim many times whether they would release a centre speaker, I was waited for so long, then I went for Trikan. Then there you are. They announced for the Axess, I would have gone for Naim centre speaker of course. Now is too late!
cheers
