Best streaming product?

Posted by: Dustysox on 04 June 2010

Afternoon gents.

I am currently using my "old" trusty Logitech Transporter as my main source. I keep seeing Majik ds pop up in forum reading. Is this a step up in audio compared to my Transporter? I'm not ready (...just yet!) to make a move on my source with so many changes in the "Streaming" pipeline.

As with all things Hi-Fi, i was just wondering...like "we" do...what if...!!

what are these changes other than Naim finally jumping on board with the Uni-products?

The transporters been around for what 5 years?

the Linn line has been at least 2?

Just get the Naim DAC for your transporter and call it a day.

Hi Patrick,

Already have NDAC powered with XPS.

Consider this the "shortest" thread ever!!

Just wondered forum members thoughts and "targets" were?

555PS it is then Winker

Dusty,

When the Uniserve comes to light you should see if it brings any improvements to the streaming side of your equation. Of course it brings the other advantages of ripping and looking good on the rack.

I think most will entertain the Serve if they can afford it. Considering most here go the demo route before buying we are likely to have another relentless "Do sources matter" thread.

555ps..... I shudder to think how much better the nDac can get. It is so good without any added PSU.

Cheers!

Ahhh..you spend my money well young Jedi!!

Will the Naim streaming bring crossfade etc and all things that I enjoy with the Transporter?

I'm still waiting for NDAC software update so that I can disable NDAC display. You see..these are the things that keep me awake at night!!

Guess until then, I will have to dip my toe in Naim Lifestyle....baseball cap with powerline it is then!!

Trust me the Linn DSes are not that much better than the Transporter, if at all.

I brought my Transporter to the Linn dealer once. The Klimax DS was somewhat better than the transporter, but not by much. In face, we could have been imagining it for all I know given the megabucks presence of the Klimax.

The Transporter still holds its own against many sources, it really does. Especially as a digital source out to a high end DAC.

XPS lifts up the performance of nDAC at a big margin. It takes it up to the level of the best digital sources on the market.
The difference between nDAC and nDAC/XPS is MUCH bigger than the difference between fronting transports.

Dustysox, I have tested Majik DS against TP some time ago and finally bought TP. TP was fantastically resolving in micro-details but very thin and analytical comparing to Majik.
Also Majik DS had better "boogy" factor and bass definition.

But Klimax DS has beaten TP in almost all aspects except the amount of details were the same as TP (on 16/44) which I believe means that TP jitter is very close to that of the best digital sources.
My source now is TP/DC1/nDAC/XPS and it beats TP in the same way as Klimax DS.

The next step is to make a home demo of UnitiServe against TP and if SQ better or on par with TP then I shall upgrade.

Just stick with the Transporter until it breaks Dustysox - that what I intend to do. It's a real shame that Logitech seem to be backing off from further firmware upgrades, but the current one seems stable so It's not a real problem. For me the 555PS is the next step.

I think they have clarified that they will fix bugs that users report. They just will not develop new features anymore.

How do folks!!

Sorry for the delay. Pesky work keeps getting in the way!!

Thank you for the heads up. Guess I'll continue to monitor the exciting developments in streaming products. I'm over the moon with my set up. I've never heard any genre sound so good.

Logitech really (in my view) got it right with the TP, and software. I'm not saying it's been without it problems, but with all the options (crossfade, shuffle etc) I really find it a joy to use.

My Columbo moment, just as you walk away....

I didn't know whether to start a new thread, but I need to learn how to correctly edit tagging of some of my "early" ripped music.

Can someone point me to an "idiots" guide?

I just can't get my head around it.

Get Tag&Rename from SoftPointer - a great program that does just what it says on the tin. Takes a while to get used to it, but a really powerful tool for managing tags.

Google Bryston BDP-1.

Could be a winner.

Naim, don't get mad, get even, give us a pure streamer.

SC.. you guys...can you stop spending my money!!!

Last night I sat playing many different genres thinking...blimey that sounds good. On these forums, and with my dealer thoughts echoing round my head that further upgrades will bring even more through the speakers. I can't believe this!! It is obviously true...I can't wait.

I want the future and I want it now!!!!

Ready when you are Naim Winker

if we believed that all upgrades produce better sounds over the last decade then the systems now are far better which they are not. systems may be more stable and after awhile we thinkk they are better . they may different not better .

Crap. They're better. You're just looking at the old stuff through rose tinted specs.

Will this help organize wav in foobar??

Unfortunately not.

The problem there is that foobar won't read tags from wav files. That is mainly due to the fact that for a long time it was not possible to add tags to wav files and only relatively recently it has become possible to do so, but there is not yet a widely accepted and implemented standard of how to do it.

So wav, foobar And tags don't go well together at the moment.

Agreed 100% on speakers, amps, pre-amps and cd players.

Heard a friend's friend's TD124 last week and was blown away, so maybe the occasional turntable is an exception.

Nothing new to compare against old tape decks, so in that case, older is always better! Winker

Damn - after fiddling around for ages and downloading T&R without success - I guess Foobar is not for me - any suggestions for a player that does handle WAV and tags? Not Itunes!

That's a 'problem' for me at the moment as well.

The best one I gan give you is mpd, but that one is a daemon (meaning it runs in the background) mediaplayer running on Linux and which can handle tags on wav perfectly and it can be controled over the LAN-network by an mpd-client (of which there are many versions that run on nearly any computer OS or handheld device).

I just wish somebody somewhere would build a plugin for foobar to read wav-tags.
