cutting corners...

Hello everyone.
I have a quick question. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I may have to re-position my speakers so they are on oposite sides of one corner of the room--facing the opostie corner, which is where my sofa will be. They will be about 1-2 feet away from the wall. Before I go through with this (the process includes moving a huge TV into the corner)--any experience with this set up? Will there be strange reflections that will mess up the sound? My speakers are 2 way Meadowlark Shearwaters.

Thanks for any advice.

Don't be afraid to try it - it can work very well indeed. You may find that you don't need to mess about with symmetry either.

Incidentally I've heard this setup used to good effect in otherwise 'problem' rooms - those where the room is nearly square - where standing wave modes coincide and things sound lumpy.

Speaker positioning is very much down to trial and error (too many variables for the maths to work). Some/Most/All of us have to make some compromises about where the speakers are placed. What works in one room may not work in another.

Mine are seriously compromised. I had to move the speakers recently to give us more room for Mrs Seagull to have a make-up party.

When the girlies had gone home I tried the hi-fi with the new position (still not ideal) and it actually sounded better than before - slightly less bass but more music!

Can you try it without moving the 'huge TV' or does this need to be moved first?

Have fun...

Thanks for the encouragement. I do have to move a 280 lbs. TV to try it, but I guess I'll give it a go. I'll let you know if my back survives.

...your TV is like ours, once you get it out of its "rut" it should roll fairly easily. We have a 55" Mitsubishi that we can move around if we need to.
