Small TV picture sometimes
Posted by: BigH47 on 04 November 2007
I am watching BBC2 NY marathon and the picture has shrunk with a large black surround. The TV 32" Thompson CRT is still switched to cinerama my normal W/S setting. I've notced this with several other sports programmes. Any ideas as to why?

I've suffered with this ever since we started using Freeview. I either swap channels or change the setting on the digibox from letterbox to 4x3. Only ever happens on BBC....

Probably because the Beeb are piping in pictures from a 'host broadcaster' who have probably filmed the event in 4:3.....

happens on itv as well for the champs league footie. its the host servers broadcast in their own aspect ratio.

Jon and Scotty are right, and it's a total pain. It cannot be beyond the wit of the UK broadcasters to run the incoming signal through some sort of software filter prior to onward broadcast.

I'd always wondered why that happened with the footie.

Isn't it strange that all these TV companies pay absurd amounts of money for the rights to show football, the cost of which is then passed on to us, the consummer. We then tune in to see a picture that covers half the bloody screen. We're being taken for mugs. Argh.

I suffer regularly with a small TV picture - admittedly this is down to the fact that I haven't yet changed to plasma technology and struggle on with my 10 years old 22" Sony CRT!
