Stageline and NA PSC2 - One's brighter than the other!?

Posted by: Naimed-In-NY on 09 July 2003

Here's a strange question I haven't seen addressed previously (maybe I missed it).

Before yesterday, my Naim gear consisted of the 200/202 combo, with a PSC2 on the 202. Yesterday I received my Stageline and anxiously hooked it up. As you know, the Stageline and PSC2 appear cosmetically identical - both are small black boxes with a small green power light in the middle. Because of space constraints, I placed the Stageline and PSC2 on the same shelf of my rack (Quadraspire) with some distance between them. I was surprised to notice that the power light on the Stageline is much brighter than that on the PSC2. Does anyone else have both of these pieces and is it the same way with your stuff? If so, anyone have any idea why the power light is so much brighter on one than the other? (I'm assuming this is normal and intended?)

I'm not about to lose any sleep over this (it all sounds so good!), but am very curious all the same.

Thanks.

Don't tell me I've stumped the forum on this one! Eek (Or, maybe they just don't care!) Another day later, the power light on my Stageline still shines far more brightly than the light on my otherwise identical PSC2. Confused I've come up with a couple of possible reasons for this strange phenomenon:

1. This is part of the design brief on the Stageline, as the brighter light is needed when dealing with analog.

2. The Stageline power light purposefully is made brighter than the PSC2 so you can tell the two components apart when trying to explain to family and friends why you have two otherwise identical plain black boxes with no writing sitting in your rack.

3. Random sample error (couldn't be this one!).

Fortunately, I've asked the geniuses at Naim to look into this for me, and they report that ....

Hi MBM,

I'm sorry I forgot about this thread yesterday as I was going to post a reply but got side-tracked elsewhere.

One thing about LEDs is that they are all slightly different in brightness anyway. I say slightly - certainly this should not be obviously noticeable.

The reason for the difference in brightness is probably due to a difference in current between the Stageline and NAPSC. This combined with the slight difference in LED brightness itself has probably combined to give a greater difference than would be normal (and probably not noticeable).

If you really want both LEDs to match then ask your dealer to see if he can alter the brightness simply by adding a resistor to the brighter LED.

Richard -

Thanks for the reply. Although the difference is noticeable, it doesn't bother me and I wouldn't bother my dealer about it. I was just surprised, couldn't figure out why one was much brighter than the other, and wanted to make sure nothing was wrong. You've set my mind at ease.

Huh? Thought Current wouldnt make a led brighter, Voltage does? Maybe I'm wrong.
