Sound Characteristics & Furniture

We've just changed our sofas in our lounge (cloth upholstered) to leather ones. Having picked the prime spot on our new purchase I settled down to listen to some music, but instantly noticed that it now sounds different. I can't really put my finger on what's changed but something has.

Can different materials in furniture change the way a system sounds or is it something that some of you guys have had similar experience with, ie changing your furniture or moving it around. The two sofas are in the same place the other ones were so my listening point hasn't changed.

Sure they can make a difference.
Unfortunately I made a number of changes to room and system around the same time and can't quantify.

Leather would tend to reflect high frequencies more than cloth, which would tend to absorb them. When you lean back in you couch your ears must get pretty close to that leather.

Try draping some cloth over the back of your seat, behind your head, and see if you notice anything. Most things you change in your room will make a difference to the sound, even the placement of decorations. Whether you notice the change, work out exactly what it is or feel it improves or detracts from what went before is another matter.
