AV2 hissing noise
Posted by: Boj on 01 November 2009
I have AV2 for few years already and was working fantastically up until recently. I use it with NAP250 + 3xNAP150. In movie mode I ues with digital optical input from my Sony Media PC. All of a sudden the left rear loudpeaker started to produce alfull static noise. I have tryed everything to find out what is cousing the noise, changing power amps, cables, etc. It only desapers when I program the AV to work without the rear speakers. Does anyone knows what the problem is. Thank you for any help.

If you have tried swapping the power amps and the noise is still coming from the same speaker, I can only imagine that there is a problem with your AV2.
If I remember correctly, there is some way of doing a "factory re-set" on the AV2 which would be a good place to start. I just did a search and it appears to be "hold down both input + mode buttons, turn on, release buttons, turn off then on again".
BEAR IN MIND THIS WILL CLEAR ALL YOUR SETTINGS.
If there is still a problem, I suspect it will have to be returned to NAIM for a service/repair.

Sounds like the digital volume chip for that channel is faulty. If you switch the unit of and leave it to cool for an hour or so and then try it again, you'll probably find it works fine again until it gets to stable temperature.

Thank you for the opinion. I will pass it to the service. By the way the volume knob is not working properly either. When I turn it either way it produces unpredictable volume increase/decrease.

That can be repaired also on the units return, remember to add it to the list of issues

I was shocked today, when was told that the service can not replace the foult chip, but would have to replace the whole main board, which will cost me GBP 1244. This is not the kind of service I expect for for NAIM equipment!!!

For THAT (read ridiculous) amount, I'd ditch the AV2 you have and buy another on the used market - there's plenty out there these days...!

I think this is a problem that Naim need to focus on from a service / repair perspective.
When the cost of buying a replacement AV2 on the open market is lower than the cost of repair, it will be difficult to justify paying the repair price.
A second hand AV2 can generally be pickup up for £8/900. So if a repair costs £1200, it may be better off just buying one of those.

Is is not what the legendary NAIM service has come to?
Forward thinking as regards servicing/faulting should ensure a £5(my estimate) chip chip should not mean the customer forking out such a huge fee.
Of course it's great way to not having repair something without saying we don't/can't repair this item.
If the chip in question is a regular failer, then buying a S/H AV2 might not be the way to go.
If this is a "1 off" type failure, I would have thought a more realistic charge and an amount of cost swallowing would save the obvious bad publicity that may/is happening.
I bet there are times NAIM wished they had never bothered with AV products, they seem the most flaky that they make.

Have to add that my AV2 has been rock solid since I bought it. I think I've had it about 8 years maybe now and have no intention of changing it at present.
It always works and sounds great.

Puzzled???
...as far as I am aware we have sent your local distributer 4x volume chips to fit if this is the same AV2...and not for £1244

Would seem a mismatch between HQ and dealer? If this is indeed the same AV2.

Yes, thanks for sending the chips and for trying to help. My buddy is now back home, unfortunatelly still not working... maybe, I should bring it to UK for repair? Let me know how do you see it? Thanks, Boj
