I have never noticed any difference due to length of speaker cable, but try different lengths for yourself and see which you prefer.

I wouldn't make them any shorter than is necessary to connect your kit...
I'm assuming you're talking about making your own interconnects. Make up a short one, just long enough to connect the kit, and then one that's 5 times longer. Make them exactly the same except for the length. Have someone else switch them (so you don't know which is which) and see if you can tell the difference. Try the test more several times and objectively tabulate your scores. This will answer the question for you.
I'll bet you can't.
There are those who claim that interconnect cable DIRECTION is highly detectable, but I'm not in that camp. Naim recommends a particular direction and that's the way I use them but I seriously doubt that anyone could reliably tell the difference.
