Uniti 3.0 Updates

Posted by: ZMCK on 20 October 2010

" Existing NaimUniti owners who are interested in updating their units with these new features should contact their Naim retailer <http://www.naimaudio.com/admin/find-a-retailer>. "

How about the customers who purchased their Uniti from a retailer in a different place than the one they are living now???
Will all retailers provide the update to all customers?
Please, just provide an address to download the upgrade files...
NAIM must understand that people do move due to many reasons and some, like me, are now living in remote places.

I would also apperciate a self update, bacause I also have a longer distance to my retailer.
If NAIM think this is a problem because one part of the update is not failsave, they should think about the FW update strategie.
I am myself a firmware developer and I know that normally it is not a big problem to make an update failsafe. Look at the Dreambox for example.
Thank you in advance.

@ZMCK
Is it right, that your last post asking for the download of the files is missing?

I too work in IT and a firmware update is something I would be comfortable with but I have a "10198" which is due a hardware and software upgrade.

Luckily, my dealer is only 5 miles away and it goes in tomorrow for a return to HQ. How long will I be without it ???? I disconnected it this afternoon and I'm missing it already Frown

Redmires, I've done many rounds of Uniti software upgrading, and that reminds me of consoling to my Cisco routers. I use a USB-to-Serial converter on my laptop (only Prolific chipset is usable) to connect to the Uniti.

Does this mean, that you have had problems with the update via serial port?
Can you give us a short introduction how to perform the update?
How can we get the necessary update files?
Thank you in advance.

Just about to pack up my Uniti to have its software upgrade done and in addition to the transit bolt I seem to have a small nut in my box! This will fit over the transit bolt and I'm now not sure whether this has fallen off and I should attach it to the bolt before fixing to the Uniti or whether it's from somewhere else!

Can anyone advise please!!

a request for Paul Stephenson cs.
what are the specs of this update;
or: where can i find this?
Posted on: 02 November 2010 by Fons
Paul, thks! One question: Do I understand correctly that the 10189 is to be returned for the digitally ipod playback and the 10198 for the iphone/ipodtouch control? I would think 10198 version 2.0.0. is the latest and requires a simple software update only.

you wrote: Depending on the software version your unit is running it will either need to receive a software update administered by your retailer (version BC SW 10189) or be returned to Naim for a software and hardware update arranged via your retailer using the Naim RMA process (version BC SW 10198). Please note that digital iPod connection requires a hardware update and will only be available FOC to those units running version BC SW 10198. The digital iPod connection update is only available for units running BC SW 10189 at a charge of £225 and these units must be returned to Naim for the update. All FOC updates are only offered to those units that remain within standard Naim warranty.

So, is NAIM going to provide a self update option for the 3.0 or not???

It is best to have the Update through a dealer, failure to do the update correctly could render the Uniti inoperable

All 10198 must be returned to Salisbury for update FOC

All 10189 can have a software update just to work with the iPhone App or returned to Salisbury and have App and Digital Ipod/iPhone for £225

That means a self update is possible, but NAIM recommends to do the update at your dealer.
I think, many people are aware that the update is not failsafe, but if Naim would provide the update description everybody can decide if he is able to do the update or not.
So, please provide the update description if a self update is possible.

I understand that for some users, the best (only) choice is to bring the Uniti to the dealer for the upgrade. But, for others, the risk involved in the transportation to the dealer is higher than performing the update at home, JUST LIKE I DID FOR THE 2.0 UPGRADE with no problems at all.
Also, I'm not interested in the n-stream features, for me the most important of the 3.0 firmware is to FIX the known issues of the Uniti with the streaming of hi-def files. I don't use Wi-Fi and the broadcast of some radios, like AVRO HD, is impossible with the Uniti, while a Squeezebox connected to the same network performs without any problem.

So, that means you have done the V2 update by yourself. Have you already done the V3 update by yourself?
Can you give a short overview of the update process (2 or 3 sentences)?
Have you got the V2 update direct from NAIM via mail or from a dealer?
Sorry for so many questions.

it seems a bit strange to me to return a machine that is bought only 8 months earlier; could you please elaborate a little on this and on the difference with the 10189 that can be updated, here in Amsterdam?

Hopefully I'm not out of line in explaining this, but:

3.x software is required for use with the n-Stream app.

10189 units are not capable of digital iPod connectivity due to hardware, but can be updated to 3.x software. Hardware can be updated for a fee (£225) to enable digital iPod connectivity.

10198 units are hardware capable of digital iPod connectivity which has been disabled at firmware level (as the enabling software was not yet ready at time of manufacture); this interim firmware CANNOT be used with 3.x software and requires a low-level re-flash of the board itself (or replacement with a re-flashed board) at the factory, free of charge. These units cannot be used with 3.x software without this step.

Current units are (largely) hardware identical to 10198 units but have the correct combination of firmware and 3.x software with digital iPod connectivity.

Just sent my uniti back to naim for the upgrade, can anyone give me an idea as too how long it's going to take? Much as my iMac speakers are not the worst in the world I'm already missing my uniti!

Cheers

To Stephan:
I did the 2.0 upgrade by myself, but until now NAIM didn't provide a self update for the 3.0.
The process is simple, just connect the Uniti to a computer with RS232 interface using a common cable, not the null modem type. Then the fist part of update takes about 10 min. and you connect to the Uniti using your ethernet network to upload the second part of the update. Simple and SAFE if you use a reliable no-break.
I got the v2 update files from NAIM via mail and still hope they will do the same with the 3.0 firmware.
I consider the risk of the shipping process itself much higher than doing the update by myself.
Again, I'm not interested in the use of any Apple related software or hardware. The most important feature of this upgrade is to FIX the issues of the Uniti with the streaming of hi-def music files.

That sounds easy.
So that means you are direct in contact with NAIM.
I am also not interested in the Apple stuff.
Maybe I will use the Uniti web interface control for my own software instead of the RS232.
So I will try to contact NAIM in Germany to get the files.

Glad to hear, was it worth the wait? How long did it end up taking in total?

Cheers

It took two and a half weeks in total so wasn't too bad. Not really had chance yet to test fully but already I can see that the pause button works on Upnp and I'll be seeing if the gapless issue is sorted shortly. I don't have Ipod/Ipad so nothing to test there. I wanted the V3 revision mainly because of the Upnp improvements. Also, had I not had the update done then it would probably be a cost option at some later date.

I'm still having media player/foobar issues but I think that's something to do with my PC.

I had mine updated a week ago. It took about 45min. I had the opportunity to listen to the Ovator S400 through a 282/250.2. Source was a HDX/DAC. I liked the sound, but it's propably not for everybody's taste (the dealer even said he liked the S400 more than the S600, exept in really big rooms). Later on the dealer hooked up the Ovator S400 to my Uniti and the sound was still very good. Source was first HDX into Uniti, then HDX/DAC/Uniti. Quite an improvement. The best was then HDX/DAC/Uniti/250.2. This sounded really good, sure not the same as with pre and power. Well, after about an hour I left the dealer with my updated Uniti and a DAC Eek
Anyway I now enjoy the music at home with HDX/DAC/Uniti. The DAC still needs some time to burn in (how long?) but it is worth the money and I already know the next step, 250.2.
Some my call this overkill but for me it seems okay.
Oh and by the way the Uniti with n-stream is really cool

Hi gmischol

Really interested that you are using an nDac into a Uniti - I was discussing this in another thread - lots of people said the Uniti isn't up to the job but I take it you like it!
