There is something missing from this story - MS must be getting something in return otherwise why just Universal?

@MichaelC
Microsoft haven't finished 'negotiating' with other studios.

Boom boom - wasn't there a similar arrangement with the record companies with blank cassettes?

The blank cassette/CDR/DVDR arrangements was with the copyright organisations.
This one is a new one I think.
I beleive we are sooner or later going to see a clear split between smaller companies releasing music and what the entertainment industry is doing. The latter is what the larger record companies aspire to be - they no longer have any real interest in music, they just inherited a lot of music artists when they bought up the older record companies.
And if the drift towards a "free download" advertising-based model continues we will see an even clearer split. The artists are no longer paid by the the consumer (the direct connection between artist and consumer that came about with the advent of the LP album is being broken). Its more like the 30's, the artist with an entertainment company will have to satisfy the new master first.
I think the deal between Universal (who has announced an ad-based free download site) and Microsoft might confirm this development.
As the internet columnist Cringely has pointed out. Microsoft goes for an ad-based model with the zune, and this fit well into Universals plans. I.e. free content for the consumer in exchange for receving a never ending parade of consumism propaganda (i.e. advertisements
). Apple has very different basic business model with its iPod.
While this is happening I have bought more interesting newly released vinyls from independents this year than for a very long time. And high quality downloads, also from small independent artists/companies.
