hi, can anyone tell me are active ibls better than passive sbls.i will be using a pair of nap 140s to drive the ibls. also the top end on ibls seems clearer than that on an sbls. what do you think?

HI BOB
IM USING THE OLD STYLE 2.4 NAXO. IVE OPENED UP ANOTHER THREAD BECAUSE IM THINKING ABOUT CHANGING MY PREAMP. I WANTED TO KNOW WOULD I BE BETTER OF GOING 72/HICAPX2/NAXO/140X2/IBLS OR 102-HICAP/SNAPS-NAXO/140X2/IBLS ANY VIEWS WOULD BE GREAT.

Andy,

I asked because I guess the NAXO is quite like my SNAXO in that you can set the bass pots to max and tweek the treble pots to suit. Try the NAXO 'naked' as well. take of the case, replace the feet. It gives me a MUCH more open & musical presentation.

Would have thought the 72/Hicap route would sound best.

Paul,

When I set the pots I set the bass to maximum and then set the treble to about the right amount. Then live with it for a few days, then tweek, then listen, then tweek....

Takes about a week to sort. BTW with the case off the sound is more open and a touch brighter, so another fine tune may be required.

Going from one 250 to an active pair is a giant leap... enjoy

Andy,

Happy it works for you too...!

I know someone who can do the necessary conversion for you. I had it done to an IXO to run with 2 differently aged 250s. PM me for details.

hi
i would still like to hear from anyone out there who can give me the answer to my original question which system would sound better and why?(102/hicap/naxo/snaps/140x2/ibls or 72/hicapx2/naxo/140x2/ibls.

Andy,

It’s quite possible that no one on this planet has yet heard this rather unusual combination, so I think it unlikely that you will get an objective, definitive answer.

Go on, break new territory, try them both for yourself.

hi paul,

my humble suggestion is to try your amps with the xover as is initially. i suspect you will be OK. i ran my active system with vastly different 250 vintages for sometime till the older one needed some attention.

i know someone here (cant remember who) runs an active system with quite different age 250's, also successfully.

as far as setting pots inside the snaxo is concerned, here are my suggestions:

(a) play the system as it across a wide range of records till you are sure what frequency bias you need to compensate for.
(b) when it comes to adjusting, please note that very small changes can make a HUGE difference to the frequency balance, so care!!
(c) live with a given adjustment for a while as in (a), i.e. play a wide range of records. if you dont do this, you will be tempted to keep making changes and the system will not have a chance to settle down.
(d) do not switch off the snaxo while doing the adjustment -- i made this mistake and the sound definitely collapses and worryingly takes some time to come back again.

i will dig up a thread with some very useful tips from dave dever (nana (ex?)) in a moment --you can probably search for posts form him yourself -- he has some very useful information.

do not hesitate to get in touch if you need help.

good luck. active is fun.

enjoy
