Reparing record covers
Posted by: Don Phillips on 01 September 2008
Hi folks
I have tried a Search on this topic, and I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum, so please inform/move/redirect as appropriate..
However, what I need to know is what is the best glue to repair record sleeves that become unstuck. I have tried "Pritt" (not a typing error) and success is short-lived - not strong enough. Any other ideas please

Thin double sided sellotape.

I've found Copydex glue to be best.

White PVA also works well. I avoid Sellotape and the like because of sticky residues over time.

Thin double sided tape here also. It's an instant fix for the sleeve edges parting company.

I have tried all of the above.
Watered down white pva glue can be blushed on as a 'varnish' to bond scruffy de-laminating edges of record sleeves (remove record first!).
Copydex has the advantage of being able to 'rub off' any rubbery residue when dry, but is a bit messier to apply.
But for those sleeve edges parting company, rather than any glue I too have concluded that double-sided tape is the most practical solution - it neither risks glue oozing out, and bonds instantly (so you you do have to be good at lining-up straight first time; but I have never found this a problem, and my hand is sufficiently unsteady so as not to risk handling an Aro!!).

Thanks guys
Looks as though double sided tape has the majority vote.
Although for my Earl Bostic LP I might use some sort of glue.

Don, though I used regular Pritt with great success, there was times that it didn’t really hold. For those most stubborn albums I would use the stronger version called “power Pritt”. 3M Scotch glue stick “purple cap” would be another brand recommended by Music Matters (some initial albums came unglued).

Then put the cover between two heavy chopping boards for a few mins.
If I use expensive, marble chopping boards will my records sound better?
I have some recordings that are bass-heavy.
Would standing the chopping boards on titanium ball bearings have a positive effect on the sound quality?

Nice big staples work well. No good if you happen to like the first track of the LP mind!

Take the elpee out of the cover first.
