I really think Fagen and Becker have their tongues embedded in their cheeks. I mean, they should be the last to complain about this sort of appropriation, having taken the bass/piano riff basic used on Rikki Don't Lose That Number from Horace Silver's Song For My Father, and having blatantly borrowed much of the title track Gaucho from Keith Jarrett's 'Long As You Know You're Living Yours, the latter for which they were sued and forced to compensate.

Surely the irony could not possibly have escaped these masters of irony. If you read their full letter posted at steelydan.com, you'll see that it hasn't.

More evidence that not only Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker, but Owen Wilson himself, are all just having some fun. Here is Mr. Wilson's public reply:

"I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, 'HEY 19.'"

Pretty funny stuff.
