HDCD

Apart from lighting up nicely my CDX2/XPS2 really highlights the difference between 'normal' CD and HDCD. So, three questions:
1) What are the actual differences?
2) Anybody know of any good web sites dedicated
to purchase of such things? I've just
realised that the Nick Drake remasters are
also HDCD as are several Stevie Wonder. What
else is and where can I get 'em?
3) How did Loose Records manage to plant a HDCD
track by the Willard Grant Conspiracy slap
bang in the middle of an ordinary CD
compilation?
Thanks,
Mike H.

All the King Crimson remasters are HDCD, but I think it means 24 bit remastered, whatever that is

1. It's difficult to know exactly without having the same track from the same master but one with HDCD and one without. I know some of the albums I have with HDCD do sound very good.
2. The Roxy music catalog reissues were all HDCD with Avalon sounding particularly good. Other recentish HDCD that stick in my mind are: Willard Grant Conspiracy - Regard the end; Beck - Seachange; Ricki Lee Jones - Evening of my best day. All these are good sounding albums.
Have a look at www.HDCD.COM
3. Not sure how this works, cos things i've seen on compilations from HDCD albums are not HDCD in my experiance.

I'll take a stab:
1.) HDCD purportedly allows for 20-bit playback using a 16-bit medium.
2.) The HDCD site is as good as any for listing HDCD information.
3.) The disc was probably burned from other digital sources. HDCD encoding is actually copied by CD burners. The single HDCD track probably came from an encoded source while the others did not.

Neil Young has released all recent albums in HDCD format since it's inception. He is also against Copy Controlled disks and still prefers analogue to digital in recording and mixing when possible.

Greeny,
Thanks for the site details. Interesting debate elsewhere suggesting CD layer of a hybrid SACD will sound better than CD or HDCD.
Adam,
I think we should all go out and get the dodgy Nick Drake right now and claim our prize!!!

Adam,
The Nick Drake CDs aren't HDCD, but are still very good. I think all the HDCDs I've played sound significantly better, so it's a shame it's not more widespread. For example, the Joni Mitchell 1970s albums were issued within the last 5 years on HDCD but these are only available as imports in the UK, most of the Joni CDs being the far inferior early CD issues. In one case I too had a CD (Court and Spark) which was erroneously labelled as HDCD but wasn't - took it back and eventually bought the true HDCD one. The HDCD of 'Miles of Aisles' is brilliant, as is Paul Simon's 'You're the One'.
Bizarre HDCD note: all the 1960s Beach Boys CDs were reissued on Capitol in 1999-2000 in HDCD, but the 1970s ones (e.g. Surf's Up, Holland) were not!(???) Except that Pet Sounds wasn't either, but it was once (????) in 2001, then reverted back to non-HDCD... having already beein issued in the PS Box Set on HDCD (you work it out). I saw the 2001 HDCD/remaster/single CD in Tower in London recently but didn't buy it!

Nick Drake - HDCD
MY copy of Pink moon bought last year had a "not HDCD" sticker stuck to the cardboard sleeve

This morning I popped in Maria Solheim's Behind Closed Doors in my CDX2 (just got the CDX2 - woohoo!) and the HDCD light came on.
Sound is very good but then it also sounded good on my Rega planet (no HDCD) - relative to other CDs. It's a good recording I suppose.
Couldn't find any HDCD marking on the CD cover but then didn't look too hard.
Bought it off Amazon.de. No mention of HDCD there either. Bit annoying that.
Aaanyway! It's the music that counts.

Mark Knopfler's Golden Heart is HDCD as I suppose all of his other solo work is. I'd like to get more, He has great guitar licks.

Hi Wolf,
I have sailing to philadelphia, and ragpickers dream, both are HDCD, and both are really good. Paul Simons last Cd you're the one (I think thats what its called) is also very good and thats HDCD as well.
A surprise one is the latest Madonna re-mix CD. Thats got some serious bass on it and, yes, its HDCD too.
The other thing is I don't this the Madge cd is on the list subject of the link above, so it would be interesting to see what others are about that are HDCD but not on the official list...
regards,
andy c

The list given on this site certainly is not complete. I have a number of HDCD's not shown on the site.

Well of the ones I mention above, Beck and some of the Roxy albums are on the list, Ricki, Willard Grant and some other Roxy's aren't.
The point is that it's not a compreshensive or definative list.

Hi Greeny,
soz pal - was not being funny with ya!
Just wanted some clues if there were particular artists that I might like who are HDCD'd but not on that list. If you'd found some then I could consider investing...
