FREE Upgrade - Speaker Positioning
Posted by: pcstockton on 30 June 2010
A few nights ago I pulled out a tape measure to see exactly where my Arivas were pointing/placed with respect to the back wall and my listening position.
Much to my surprise they have moved slightly from initial set-up. this mostly due to the slight moving of the carpets underneath my kit mostly from the dog running around.
Even with the spikes going through the carpet, they can still slide on the wood floors a bit.
In any event, both speakers were toed out. ONe by 1/2" the other by about 1/4". I know it is only fractions of an inch but once squared up to the rear wall, and making sure both speakers were the exact same distance from the back wall, the SQ improved dramatically.
They are now about 7' apart and 8" from the rear wall. The sound is MUCH more cohesive without the slight left channel prominence (the right speaker was toed out 1/2"). Oddly, when dialing in the balance using Mono recordings I never really noticed a drop in performance, and in playing some mono after the repositioning I didn't feel an improvement. But on the Stereo recordings the focus of the music snapped into place to a large degree. In comparison to the previous sound, the old placement made music a little disjointed. Now I cannot hear individual speakers.
Anyway... if you havent checked this in a while it could be worth looking into.
Cheers,
Patrick
