The DOORS LP Box Set - It's actually happening!!!

Posted by: 555 on 12 March 2008

Got an email from fminor.com today giving me this heads up ...

We just received an update from Rhino on the progress of the Doors Vinyl Box Set. They have spent the last couple months cleaning up the tapes to ensure this will be the definitive pressing of these historic albums. Jac Holzman (the founder of Elektra Records) and Bruce Botnick (the original Doors producer) have been hard at work in the studio. With the assistance of Mastering Engineer Bernie Grundman (who actually mastered the original albums and still has all of his original mastering notes!), they have transferred the original analog master tapes through Grundman's all-tube console and all-tube cutting lathe. All the parties concerned with this project (and they are all taking it very seriously!) feel that this approach has allowed them to get the very best sound transferred to the lacquers.

I'll be sticking to my Rhino HDCD box set which is sonically brilliant,
but I thought the boys & girls who are into the black stuff might like to know ...

Like so much in life it depends on your point of view Biggy;
If you've spent £10K+ on your system it is a good bargain,
because you get your monies worth from purchasing the record.

I take your point BigH, but as I've upgraded over the years, some pressings I'd relegated to the "sell on Ebay" pile, have been given a new lease of life and sound better than my prime choices. I keep my mind open now.

The new box set sounds great. Maybe it takes a top system to show it's potential, but it does sound great.

My box set arrives today. I'll let you know what I think after I have had a chance to listen. I dawdled and my usual sites were sold out but found it at cduniverse though. Let's hope the UPS man doesn't bang up the package too much.

So far I've listened to Strange Days and LA Woman. Pretty darn good sounding, especially LA Woman. I will eventually get to the rest but am encouraged by what I have heard thus far.

Just got mine from Rhino £99.99. They probably still have stock.

So far, Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun have been brilliant though I don't have much to compare them with.

I have just recieved a e-mail shot from Acoustic Sounds - and it seems there is a product recall on the box set - mainly due to problems with the packaging
My set was badly scuffed on all the LP spines which I put down to transportation - but I was pretty disappointed. It appears that customers can write direct to Rhino to get replacement covers etc. As my lp playing system is not set up (see profile) I have not listened to the records but they look pretty good with no apparant problems
