I Mac into Uniti - A little help if I may....

Posted by: fathings cat on 12 September 2010

Hi all, I recently bought an I Mac and have it plugged into the front analogue input on a uniti. Usage is pretty basic i.e. just i radio.

A couple if questions:

1) Am I correct in thinking I could add a hiface/evo and connect I mac to uniti via it - if so what cable would I need and is it worthwhile??

2) My CD's are currently stored an a nas drive - ripped via dppower amp which I stream over UPNP. Is there much value in ripping CD's via I tunes?

Really exciting times for audio and am looking forward to NDX but in the meantime interested in getting the most out of uniti/imac

Any help would be appreciated and preferably in a language I can understand Confused

Thanks
Gary

Hi Farthings Cat

The 3.5mm headphone jack is optical therefore a 3.5mm to TOSLINK should do the business (I'm assuming the Uniti has an optical input). I have an Optocoupler that works well between my Mac Mini and Transporter.

yup optical lead and mini adapter at around 3 quid will set you straight.

A couple of inexpensive quick options:

1. Buy a Toslink to Mini-toslink cable (Chord Optichord available in this format or a no-brand one off eBay for a few pounds). Connect this between your iMac and one of the optical inputs on the back of your Uniti. This will keep your front panel free and tidy.

2. Buy a HiFace (RCA version) for the iMac (£100) and a 75 Ohm RCA Coax cable and connect this to one of the coax inputs on the back of your Uniti.

Option 2 will sound better, but cost more.
