Naim have with Image hifi magazine Germany produced a limited edition serious black stuff 180g LP . "None but the lonely heart" Charlie Haden and Chris Anderson.
Here is the catch the album can be purchased from our estore when you purchase the same title on cd or the new chris anderson "from the heart solo project". The album will be charged at £17.50. Then email anna.tooth@naim-uk.com give her your order number from the store and say " Yes I am a vinyl head " , she will arrange to include the album.
Once they have gone they have gone!!

Yes we only have 250 copies( 150 we sold 100 yesterday) they are sold by us as part of a Chris Anderson promotion. This will directly help the artist.
There will be a small number of discs available also from Ken Christianson at Pro Musica CHICAGO kcpromus@aol.com price will be around 21pounds plus shipping.

Does this perhaps prove to you that there is a market for vinyl!
Tony.

That is just as a result of a mention on this forum - 106 sales is not a bad figure at all when seen in that light. Imagine what you would get if you advertised them along with the CDs in the press... a mention in Listener or Stereophile should easily shift a reasonable sized pressing and easily get you into a nice profit. Remember weak willed audiophiles will fling out 25 quid a pop for a decent bit of vinyl, just check out Classic Records, DCC etc.

"25 quid a pop" yikes we slipped up!

How many Cds of the same Lp were sold in the first few days or how many in total? Your figure of a break even figure of 3000 sales seems extraordinarily high. The way forward to my eyes is to have a single reliable company pressing the Lps and labels like Naim or smaller having some sort of liscensing agreemnet with them. Presumably naim are not trying to make vast profit from the recording business so this would make sense.
Looking at the big picture though its clearly economically more sensible to get superbly recorded CDs which do a pretty good job of rivalling vinyl and allow small independent and radical labels to release their music. Martin Davidson of emamem (Evan Parker etc) thinks CD (now and with attention to detail) is far better than vinyl for independent labels and all his recordings are of superior quality. I tend to agree with this and despite replacing all my older Cds with vinyl, think that Cds (on a humble cd3.5) sound excellent these days.

Around 2k of the cd "NONE BUT" sold first day, total about 15k.

Paul, thanks. I'm surprised at the number. It is a very good CD though. I have to say I am now convinced by the economic argument against vinyl. Mosaic vinyl sells really slowly and they have the most extraordinary catalogue.I hate almost all the 180g stuff that is produced these days esp. simply vinyl, get back . Its a scam.
Hockman, I agree with your assessment completely. I'm still completely won over by vinyl but must confess its not necessarily about the sonic speriority, I just like buying them and find it more rewarding to listen to LPs. My attention span is too short for CDs.

Handling cd's is such a non-event compared to an album. Even the experience of buying them in the shops is totally different. Cannot see a way back though.

Agree, Cd does not have the same feel as vinyl and "smell"!!! BUT would I go back to Snap,Crackle and Pop-No. Cd is beginning to compete well with vinyl, I can swop readily between them, CD3.5 + Flat Cap gives my rebuilt Thorens+RB300+MC15 a good run. Can not understand £25 vinyl copies when can pick up Cd for £8-10(eg Led Zep).
Incidentally do you vinylophobes have the same devotion to analogue sound and vision? do you slavishly buy films on Video rather than the "poorer" digital format DVD , probably Betamax as well.
Steve

I but records because there is a wealth of old music out there which can be picked up for 2-3 quid a go.
For that sort of money I will put up with a bit of rice crispies

I have a Dish satelite system here in Texas and on many stations the number of bits from the satellite are reduced, providing noticeably pixellated dark areas of the picture. If that's the best they can offer, then give me terrestrial analogue any day.

quote:This is a huge issue that many seem to overlook. When you look at the CD collection available for an insanely popular artist such as Martin Denny, it pales in comparison to the number of original issues on Liberty vinyl that can be had (10 vs. 35). If you enjoy music that was created prior to 1985 or so, vinyl certainly has large advantages in this regard.

Until Exotic Moog is available on CD, I will simply not be satisfied with the medium.
