Aimee Mann

Posted by: blueoyster on 03 April 2003

I recently saw the film 'Magnolia' and was impressed with the Aimee Mann soundtrack. She is one of those artist that passed me by, any suggestions as to which CD to buy as a starter?
I am also into Talk Talk (Colour of Spring is just amazing!) I understand that Mark Hollis has a couple of CD`s available, are they any good?

Thank you & good night

Haven't heard any of Ms. Mann's solo stuff, but "Welcome Home" by Til Tuesday is a favorite of mine.

The Magnolia soundtrack album is fine, almost a 'proper' album by her with just a couple of supertramp tracks tacked on. The album I'd recommend as a starter though is Bachelor No.
2. It has a number of the Magnolia songs included and is all round a very fine thing.

Her last album-Lost In Space was a bit of a disapointment compared to this.

I'm out of kilter on this one, I thought "lost in space" was a superb album (one of my top 2 or 3 last year). I then bought "batchelor # 2" and was disappointed.

My personal favorite is Whatever. This album must be relatively old now and it is one of those albums that I keep playing. I subsequently bought Bachelor No 2 and I'm with stupid, but although they are high quality work, I found them less engaging than Whatever. It could simply be that they require more "burn in" time than I gave them.

I'll maybe give them another try at the weekend.

Good film as I recall.

I'd agree with Bruce.

Bachelor No 2 is a great album, and whilst there are some good tunes on Lost in Space, it hasn't grabbed my attention quite as much as B. no. 2 yet.

Having said that, her songs do seem to be quite "slow burners". On a first listen nothing immediately jumps out and grabs you, but over a few listens they really grow on you.

cheers

"Whatever" and "Lost in Space" in either order. Magnolia is good too.

cheers

IMHO 'Magnolia' is a sublime little gem of an album and stands head and shoulders above the rest. Don't hesitate just get it! It was the first Aimee Mann album I bought and i've been a little disappointed by the rest. Some of the best tracks (although not all) from 'Batchelor No2' are on Magnolia anyway. Enjoy!

Mark Hollis has made one solo album 'Mark Hollis'. It's extremely quiet and beautiful in the later Talk Talk style.

Whatever is my favorite Mann too.

Talk Talk:
'Spirit of Eden' is my favourite.
You should definately get Mark Hollis's solo album if only to see the direction he went after 'Laughing Stock'. It must be one of the quietest pieces of music ever recorded. I don't play it as much as the 'Talk Talk' stuff but it is very beautiful. If you like it try listening to Miles Davies 'In a Silent Way' (To go off on another tangent completely!)

Whatever is her best album by some distance, although I'm With Stupid is also highly recommended. The last two Til Tuesday albums, Welcome Home and Everything's Different Now, are stunning. They were effectively Aimee Mann solo albums, and include some of her best writing.

Buy with confidence.

And you get some great album covers to boot.

Almost as classic as the Y Kant Tori Read album shot!

Whatever is superb.

Another big thumbs up for the 'Til Tuesday album Welcome Home.

The tracks 'Coming Up Close' and 'David Denies' are two of my favourite tracks of any album I own.

I have no Aimee Mann, BUT 'Whatever' is usually bandied around as being her must have effort.

Talk Talk - I think Colour of Spring is quite superb. Spirit of Eden is the generally reguarded classic, and it is indeed very good but pushes it just a tad too much into the ambient/quiet/loud/discordant sphere for me.
Laughing Stock their next (and last??) album moves even further this way.
