Ken,
presumably this is 'no effect on sound quality of the DIN inputs'.
I can't deny that this would be more convenient for non-Naim sources that have phono outputs.
Just hope it's not a sign that Naim are deviating from the faith. 'DIN sockets are the one true connector'.
Except for BNCs, of course. These are conspicuous by their absence from the Stageline? When will we see the second all-phono input Naim product?
cheers, Martin
so, £3x1400 for the 4-tier = £4200. close to SL2 territory!
i wonder how they would arrange things if the system was active?? come to think of it, why wasnt the system active anyway...?
i wonder whether the config of the preamps and cd player on different racks was dictated somewhat by the requirement to A/B test 52 vs 552??
I was told by Naim (Paul Darwin) that the double space between the cdsii and xps was CRUCIAL!!! in order to keep all the tiers the same height! hee hee!.
hmmmm...? this doesnt sound serious. surely there has to be another reason.
Note, the 552ps/500ps/500 were all to the LEFT of the 552/52, but not MILES away from each other. This should help with domestic harmony!
proximity to xformers and all that??? couldnt have sounded any good?

so do i...

Very good pictures, hope you are all back to the "normal music excitement" at home after the show.
Sorry if I do not comment very often in the forum but this time I think we where all very at our utmust of expectations of what music and naim can approach to deliver....
and about the new speakers....wonderful they have the nice shape and it remains me from the top line naim speakers, hmmm, sbl and well... dbl!
wooooww!!
Sculptured Loudspeakers, may I say that?
Congrats to all at Naim
To Ken,
Yes ken, I would agree with you, I think that for sbl owner's It looks like one have to revise the bank account once again ah?!

The Totem system featuring the new Rega P9. Apparently this was working much better than the official Rega room.
No, naimized....hmmmm
Cheers,
Steve
First the SL2 -- mid/bass unit is identical to the SBL, the tweeter is the same as in the NBL & DBL (an upgraded version of the SBL tweeter). According to Roy, the tweeter covers the greatest range of frequencies, that is why it is so important to isolate it from the cabinet and hold it rigidly in space. The frame holding the tweeter is pivoted down at the bottom where it attaches to the speaker stand. The passive X-over is similar to the SBL's. The walls of the lower cabinet had Naim's usual mass-damper arrangement.
The 552 -- developed as a no-compromise design, Roy mentioned several times that he and the team had tried lots of new things, but reassuringly kept coming back to what is used now in the 52. This includes circuit topology and PCB material (Roy mentioned that they tried some very exotic PCB material which costs an arm & a leg, but it sounded worse!). The major differences are the split-rail power supply (hence no compatibility with other pre-amps or power supplies), and dealing with microphony. The power supply uses an 800VA transformer, which was the biggest one they could fit in the box -- smaller ones didn't sound as good. All this to deliver just 50mA! In the 552, the PCBs are mounted on a leaf-spring suspension system like in the CDS2, to reduce microphony. Interestingly, the 552 has metal feet (like the CDS2), which was found to work best with the suspension system. The power supply has rubber feet (like all non-suspension equipment).

P9 sharing space with a CDP on top of the Pre all on a maxi-size Lack (by far the least rigid of the Lacks). Placed in the middle of (2!) pairs of speakers, to boot.
It's interesting that Totem got nicer sounds from that setup, which breaks every rule in the book, than Rega's.

Looks like the Rega 9 has metal feet under it ay the rega stand... does that mean the Rubber feet have been ditched?

It actually looks as though the stand is separate from the Fraim...

We spent the weekend cycling around the vineyards and wineries in Martinborough and sampling/buying. I guess thats a reasonable consolation.
Rico, some nice stuff out of Ata Rangi this year n'est pas ? Also nice P.N. out of Palliser, did you get to bless that too ?
Taste Martinborough was also a great party this year, did anyone get along ?
Cheers
John
I did indeed get to sample the PN at Palliser - rather good. Sadly not financial enough right now to acquire any.
Missed Toast Martinborough - must ensure Mrs Rico and I attend next year. It was interesting to hear/meet folks over there talking about going to this year's 'Toast New Zealand' in London (well, Ham Polo Club again, I expect) - we attended last year, and had a great time. Sad not to be there for this one!
Ata Rangi - sublime. Introduced some mates to it while London-bound, no sadly nothing else gets a look in if present on a wine list... doctors have confirmed this new affliction as "occulus at-rangus singularius".
Rico - SM/Mullet Audio
It was a great party though, 10,500 gently tipsy folk grooving to some OK music, kind of felt like a baby-boomers back-to-the 70s rock festival run by a squiffy chef in a lovely countryside setting on a pleasant, sunny day.
Cheers
John
