**** recordings

1. Coldplay - Rush Of Blood
2. David Gray - New Day

These two are seriously bad recordings/productions.

The new Santana isn't much better. A friend has a Buddy Holly CD recorded in 1958 that pisses on these discs.

What is going on. Is it fashion, or incompetence?

My vote is for crap music in the first place. I think any decent producer would have trouble making Coldplay and David Gray sound good!!

Tell me who I should be listening to and I'll chuck out everything you don't approve of.

The Coldplay is not good on my system, but is rendered painful through a 552/500 which is ruthlessly revealing.

Good recordings are stunning, of course.

The price one pays for opening the window.

You're right. 'White Ladder' was virtually a home made recording and sounds reasonably good.

The new one on a major label sounds pants.

It's not as good musically, either.

Iron and Wine is a new, Nick-Drake-alike album being touted in various places as album of the year material.

It's sonically dreadful -- utterly lifeless and distant.

The album was recorded in the the singer's home, but this is no excuse for the pathetic production quality. Even within the Nick Drake set, recent at-home recordings (like Neil Halstead's latest) have maintained high production values.

Iron and Wine's music would have to be really good to overcome the massive recording handicap here. FWIW, it's not.
