New CD Cases

Posted by: BigH47 on 27 December 2006

Any one got any CDs with these new style cases? They do seem to feel more substantial then the original style and the inserts seem more securely held in.
They have rounded corners, perhaps to stop you hijacking an aircraft with one? Winker

The latest Lisa Miskovsky is in a 'new style' case. Not really reflected on any differences, but I guess it does seem sturdier and yes, the insert is held in place much better.

The first disc I saw in new style cases was an Eleanor McEvoy disc but that was almost 8 years ago. At the time the smaller independents were using them for hybrid discs. If it is the same kind of cover you are talking about that is.

I had 8 cd's for xmas and I think 3 of them were in the new style cases - they certainly seem a bit more robust - especially the hing mechanism,

The only one i have is PJ Harvey: the peel sessions. Must have been having a blond moment as it took me ages to work out how to get in to it. Oh well......

Best thing is it's easier to get the booklets out. It's taken them 23 years to develop it though!

I thought these cases were only for SACDs?

Problem is, with their rounded ends, you can't get the booklet or tray liner from older CDs into the new case.

The best cases were those used by Mobile Fidelity which offered up the CD upon opening.

I thought they were only for SACD too. The new Eleanor McEvoy came this way, as did the last one which I believe is hybrid CD-SACD. I presume the new one is SACD as well.

Never liked the MoFi cases. Too fiddly for me, with too little benefit. I do like the paper cases which resemble an LP cover in many ways.

Have to say Skip I am the opposite. I hate having to drag a disc out of the LP cardboard cases, well some anyway. The latest Neil Young Fillmore being a prime example. Bare disc unprotected from the outer sleeve. Difficult to get out, fingerprints everywhere and scratches easily.

My other pet hate is digi-pak's especially the ones that are not plastic and have a piece of foam stuck to the centre to hold the disc.

I just got one mail order from Play.com and the corner is smashed. Don't know where to get a replacement and the insides won't transfer to the conventional style cases. Not the best first impression for me.

Everything is an improvement on the stupid jewel cases, if you ask me.

I have never had a problem opening jewel cases and extracting the contents.

I didn't realise that a recent purchase was in a new style case. I tried to open it like a normal case and as a result that case is broken, with a split extending from the outer edge of the "lid" to the hinge.

On balance I prefer the standard jewel cases.

Q. How many folk singers does it take to change a light bulb?

A. 10. One to change the bulb and nine to sing about how good the old one was....
