Going Active(on the cheap)

Posted by: David Patterson on 12 January 2003

I am aiming to go active in the near future, and would like to do it with a pair of isobariks that i obtained recently. My problem is i have a pair of DMS with single cannon conector.I plan to enter the cabinets one way or the other once i have enough info on internal layout and placement of crossover, does anyone know( dont worry if it goes pear shaped i did not pay much for them). Also what is the difference between a Naxo 3-6 and a Snaxo 3-6 and are the adjustments possible for just bass and treble. One last point has anyone got an active setup with different power amps on Bass mid and high. System at the mo is CDi 32.5 hi 250,with respect please do not advise me to change any front end, i once had Credos and had a shot of IXO , this realy did it for me, the distortion was so low you just wanted to turn the volume up and up.Help appreciated.

There have been some internal old Isobarik photos posted on the pfm forum. I don't have a link at the moment. The poster was 'Stumo'. There's also a link on the pfm forum (look for a recent thread regarding Keilidh and Kaber) to a copy of the Linn loudspeaker manual, which gives some advice regarding drive unit removal.

If I were converting old briks to active I would probably remove both bass units and run the wires out through the existing XLR hole to three flying XLR sockets. Seal the hole with a big blob of silicon. This way involves no drilling...

....Then pick up a Linn aktiv crossover, and 3 LK280 amps!!! Hey presto More drive, headroom, slam, punch, weight, scale, refinement and poise...and no annoying silences when the beloved 250 gasps for breath!

Your sources are probably deficient. It's a classic problem with an active sistem.

Thanks guys for the comments, after a bit of thought and discusion with my dealer(and input from the missus re. visuals) the whole idea has been ditched.

Went out and bought new speakers today, budget variety, new range, not reviewed yet, but brill. I doubt if you will hear any one admit to having them, preconceptions !!

Anyway now got one spare pair of Briks(would have been a shame to assault them ).

I wanted to take my old DMS to active, so I called Linn in Florida.
No one there had ever seen a pair of DMS or PMS and I'm not sure they knew what I was talking about.
So, I e-mailed Linn and they basically told me it was impossible and I would be arrested by the speaker police if I attempted it.
There is some info on Pink Fish about it, and I've been tempted to go for it, but I don't have enough amplification to get it done, nor are my sources really up to it (yet).
I think I'll search for a set of "real" PMS and do it that way.
