Early Elektra Classics

Posted by: Gavin B on 01 October 2010

Folks

I've just listened to the free CD that came with this month's Mojo magazine. It's called 'Journey to Love: Rare and Early Elektra Classics'. Now, I don't normally even bother to take these out of their packaging, but I gave this one a go in the car this morning and it's fantastic. The only artists I'd heard of were Judy Collins, Tim Buckley and Love, but it turns out to be a great CD. I'd heartily recommend shelling out for the magazine to get a copy.

Can anyone suggest any other compilations of early Elektra stuff?

I have the Golden Age Of Elektra 5 disc set plus book, which is amazing.

Can't see exactly what's on that Mojo comp, but you need some Clear Light (cross between Love and Doors, featruring future members of Doors, CSNY, Todd Rundgren band)

Both Earth Opera albums

The first Ars Nova album

And a load more :-)

Ooooh..... and my favourite - Cosmic Sounds The Zodiac. Totally psychedelic sounds (early moog, sitar, the kitchen sink) plus (and this is the bit that takes some getting used to) spoken word on the matter of each of the star signs.

MUST BE LISTENED TO IN THE DARK

One of the most ripped-off bass-lines ever...

Ah, so mostly folk and blues.

Then may I recommend Judy Collins - Who Knows Where The Time Goes.

This is a 1968 album that features mostly excellent covers including Leonard Cohen songs, the first time I'd ever heard the title track, and even Hello Hooray (before Alice Cooper got their paws on it).

And Judy Henske - High Flying Bird. Great voice. Bluesier. Sounds slightly more dated but none the worse for that. Check out Baltimore Oriole.

I second Gary's recommendation of the box set. It is absolutely terrific.

I think I may cry. I've just checked back on Amazon to when I bought it (2006) - it cost me £143.99 and it's now £35.47!

The first part of the programme that Blueknowz refers to was re-broadcast on Radio 2 last night (Tuesday 5th October). It's sure to be on iPlayer (UK only?). Part 2 is next Tuesday.
Good stuff!
