Mixing New and Old Equipment

Posted by: Jack911 on 20 November 2003

Can anyone give an opinion on how well the new black equuipment mixes with the old olive equipment?

Do some components mix better than others? For example, old CD with new pre/power amps OK but old preamp with new power amp a bad idea etc.

I have succesfully mixed a CD5 with olive hicaps and 82 and 250 and it sounds sublime to my ears, but saying that I did try a black 282 and had poor results, see my "nac282 a dissapointmnt" thread.

Jack--

Limited direct experience, but it seems that mixing black equipment with olive works if the black gear is upstream of the olive. I heard a black 202/black hicap drive both a olive and black 250; worked very well. Using an olive 102/hicap to drive either a black 200 or 250 was not so happy...

I upgraded the XPS feeding my CDS2 to a new XPS. From cold, the new XPS sounds bigger, but after about two weeks I found only one expression for what had happened: My source had been supercharged! The sound is much more natural, phrasing becomes very lyrical, timing more precise, it's absolutely wonderful.
