NAPV145 with an AV amp.

Posted by: crackie on 25 August 2008

Hi ,

I have just got a Denon 3808 AV Amp. & have it set up with the front L/R channel pre. out to my 252 via. AV unity gain.

Has anyone got a similar set up with a
NAPV 145 driving the centre channel speaker via. the AV amp. pre. out. Is it possible /
advisable to do so ?

Cheers ,

Pete

Perfectly possible to do this Pete, but given that the quality of the 145 is far better than the Denon you'll produce an unbalanced sound.

What speaker(s) are you using?

I ran this sort of setup with a previous Naim system but using a Marantz processor. The main system used a 72/140 with the rears and centre powered by a pair of 90.3 amps with a couple of custom RCA to DIN cables. My centre channel could be bi wired so i took the links out and used both channels of the 90.3 to bi-amp the speaker. If you want to go this route in your system a couple of 150's would do the job nicely for centre and rears or a 175 to do all 3. Gives plenty of potential for a processor upgrade in the future.

Hi Crackie,

The arrangement you suggest will obviously only be possible if you have a centre channel pre-out on your Denon. Sorry if I'm being obvious here, but to my knowledge AV amps (I use a Sony) generally only provide front L & R pre-outs, not centre. So if this is the case, you'll be stuck with the Denon driving the centre channel, no way round it. If you DO have a centre pre-out then the 145 will obviously produce a much superior result and would be the best way to go.

It's got pre-outs for all channels.

I am using Dynaudio Contour Centre & Audience 42 for Front L/R & rear L/R .

I will be getting a Chord Crimson RCA to DIN made up for the front L/R pre. out . If I get the 145 I will need a RCA to XLR lead for this . Will this connect straight from the Denon to 145 , or will I need to go through the Supercap or another PS unit with another lead ?

It is already an unballanced sound , I played the Stones "Shine a light" on Blu ray last night & the sound from the Front L/R via the 300 was
so superior it was not funny ! Hence that is why I will be up for some more cash to match up the centre channel with a 145.

Straight from the Denon to the 145.

One thing I hadn't thought of was that Naim power amps can be unstable if driven from an unsuitable pre. Better check this out with Naim to be on the safe side.

And of course by taking more work off the Denon, there will be more power reserves to run the rear speakers.
