202 or 282? an upgrade

Posted by: ricardo on 25 February 2003

Hello - a first post here so i hope all's ok with it.

I have really enjoyed my naim system (sistem !???) for the last two and half years, and am now thinking of some upgrades, particularly in view of the new equipment now available. Specifically, I'm thinking of changing the nait 5 for a pre / power amp combination. My existing arrangement is:
CD5 / Nait 5 / Flatcap2 / Intro2

I don't have an exhuastable supply of funds, but i would rather stretch the cost now than change again in another couple of years. My experience suggests that a great improvement is achieved with a good pre amp with a good PSU.

My inclination is therefore to look at the 282 with a 200, and use existing flatcap2 to power the 282.

Alternatively, for similar money, there's the option of a 202 + NAPSC + Hicap + 200.

It's really a question of the difference between the 202 and the 282. At double the price, what does the 282 have (apart from the NAPSC + separate play/record) that the 202 doesn't ?

Any comments, suggestions or experience would be most welcome. Thanks

ricardo,
I'd take a listen to the CDX2 before you consider upgrading your amp (if your budget will stretch). You may be surprised at the difference it makes to your system.
IMHO of course.

Ricardo,

Sorry, couldn't resist. I've not heard a 282, but I can tell you that a 202/NAPSC/200 will sound absolutely fab compared to the Nait and will satiate your lust for quite a while.

I must second Nick's suggestion, though -- do give it a try before you spend. It can be a revelation. Oh, and don't A/B dem with 5-second snippets.

Thanks for the comments.

Now time to have a good listen and decide.

Another question might be: At more than double the price, what does a 282 have that a used 82 doesn't?

I upgraded my pre-power to an 82 with x2 hicaps["old style"]with a cd 3.5+ & old flatcap front end.I didn't listen much to cd's until I got a cdx + psx.[again all old style].The 3.5 worked well with a 102 +HC,but showed its shortcomings with the better amp.
The new stuff will probably still show up system imbalances.
